Lenny Kravitz did a killer version of the KISS classic Deuce.
Talking of KISS, (my all time favorite band) they have done a couple of absolute stinker covers.
On the Love Gun album, "And Then She Kissed Me" oh boy, thats bad and then, on the Gene Simmons solo album "When You Wish Upon A Star" Oh Gene, if that was your first ever attempt at singing a song I would have advised you to keep the teaching job. Boy that one stinks.

I'm surprised nobody has yet mentioned all the covers that have been done over the years of Eddie Cochran's 1958 hit "Summertime Blues". Some of the most noteworthy covers of it have been done by Blue Cheer, The Who, and Rush.
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Dwight, I'm deeply hurt that you skipped my post regarding the Who's cover of that gem...although I admit I forgot about Blue Cheer, that cover is noteworthy as well (and quite likely their only great song to boot).

If it's on cassette or vinyl is it still a "cover"?

I didn't know "Hush" by Deep Purple was a cover! LOVE that song. Probably responsable for some hearing loss I love it so much Quote:
Mustang Sally by The Commitments ( movie soundtack )
GREAT soundtrack, and movie. My friends and I played basically that version of that song. Love it...
As I'm sitting here reading and hoping to remember all the covers I thought of last night, the most obvious one came on the radio! Crossroads by Clapton. Also love Hard to Handle by the Black Crowes.
And I think you guys are right, Hurt by Cash has got to be WAY up on the list. It's guys like that who make the kinds of covers I like. TOTALLY different than the original. Totally awesome.

You beat me to it! I saw your post. Awesome version with the Ox doing the old man voices. Love that guy...
Someone also mentioned Hayseed Dixie. Brilliant stuff. I really appreciate musicians who have an obvious sense of humor, but are great musicians too, ya know?

Benny, if you want brilliant but deviant covers you need to look for the two Run C&W cd's. R&B done bluegrass style, totally tongue-in-cheek. "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" will slay you.

Forgot about "Summertime Blues". There have been a ton of bands that did that one. It is almost like "Louie, Louie", you're not really a band unless you have played it. Lenny Kravtiz also did a cover of "American Woman" that I thought was better than the The Guess Who's original version. The Flying Lizards had an album called "Top Ten", it was alll covers done in their experimental electronic sound with monotone female voice. Dizzy Miss Lizzie, And Then He Kissed Me. Soren Soren

For Led Zeppelin covers checkout any of Dread Zeppelins versions. Robert Plant has said that Dread Zeppelin is the best Led Zeppelin cover band he has heard. To say the least they are very different from Led Zeppelin, which makes it very interesting. Here is their version of Stairway to Heaven Tom

...or his "Mister Tambourine Man", maybe?!
And speakin' o' reeeeeally bad cover songs and goin' waaaaay back, let us not forget about all those Pat Boone covers of "Race Music"(as it was called back in the '50s) of songs like Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" and Fats Domino's "Ain't That A Shame", folks! Now THOSE were pretty darn bad!

Well, I wouldn't say "all", Mark! (you know there a couple of around here old enough to remember the '50s and who are old enough also not have to get up each and every morning and go to work for The Man anymore)

I really like FJ's first list, Marilyn Manson's cover of "Tainted Love" rocks and it seems so appropriate for him...
"99 Red Balloons" (Nena) by Goldfinger "Protest and Survive" (Discharge) by Anthrax (from what I understand it's not much different from the original punk version) "Blue Monday" (New Order) by Orgy
