Here we go: Judas Priest- Diamonds and Rust Van Halen- You're No Good Iron Maiden- Crosseyed Mary Guns N Roses- Mama Kin Motley Crue- Helter Skelter Tesla- Signs Frijid Pink- House of the Rising Sun Santana- She's Not There Molly Hatchet- Dreams I'll Never See It's not really a cover, but when The Rossington-Collins Band played Freebird w/o vocals, they reduced entire stadiums to tears. (the audience used to sing it for them) And finally, the greatest of all covers, the most unique. Thousands of artists do this one, but it was only done once like this... Jimi Hendrix- The Star Spangled Banner Let the Freak Flag Fly!
Steelheart- '03 Speedmaster Black/Yellow

I still have that cd... And for the record (!), I hate cover versions... Write your own ****** songs.. Old standards/blues/traditional - not a problem. But rock classics... if they were good enough to be hits the first time some new rendition ain't gonna make 'em any better. Just my antiquated opinion...

The most memorable cover I've heard in a long while http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGDLT-AUQCII need a poultice of Brylcreem & gear lube to get the little hairs on my neck to lay down again ------------------------------------------- Always a wealth of covers from the Bluegrass folks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApQHQPSUErc---------------------------------------------- This one is in my opinion, a modern masterpiece of covers, although there isn't much post-Dinosaur stuff that Don Was does that I don't enjoy http://www.amazon.com/Rhythm-Country-Blues-Various-Artists/dp/B000002OR2Scroll down to audio samples near the bottom for a listen. Reba McEntire's voice on this recording could tear a hole in the soul of the devil himself & "Patches" sung by George Jones & BB King?... Phew! I used to play this cover of "Patches" turned up to 11 to get the kids outta bed for school. They hated it -- I loved it. It's all good. Bet they still remember the lyrics. (Gotta give 'em some culture you know) ----------------------------------------------- Koko Taylor does Ted Nugent's "Hey Baby" like it was written just for her. Can't find a link though. ------------------------------------------------ Here's one for fun from the distant past, recorded on "The Johnny Cash" TV show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ydy_EakGfY

Awesome DTB/Susan Tedesci song!! Love it.
I am particular to covers that are much different from the original, like the Joe Cocker versions of Beatles tunes. That being said, I also like the SRV version of Little Wing.

Mustang Sally - Buddy Guy With a Little Help From My Friends - Joe Cocker Going Down - Jeff Beck Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You - Jeff Beck Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaughn
Plus some great covers done by Delbert McClinton

First - Good topic! And for those so opposed to covers - Sometimes a new twist is refreshing, sometimes even better. I think many would be surprised how many rock hits where covers of other's work that didn't get noticed or originated in othe genres. Anyway, that's all I got to say about that. A couple of my favs that come to mind are
Susan Tedeschi's 'Angel From Montgomery' Bonnie's, too (Prine is good, but the other two can make you cry)
Johnny Cash's 'Hurt'
Mellencamp's 'Teardrops will fall'
Van Morrison's 'Midnight Special'
Several artist are quite adept at refining a cover and making it their own. Particularly good are the likes of the Stones, Tedeschi, Stevie Ray, Johnny Lang (many more escape me). Beyond rock, and previously mentioned, are materials from grass root American stuff, particularly Blue Grass and Blues, of which continually get done and re-done - many becoming classics in their own right. Note Iris DeMent's cover of Blue Grass Gospels ('Lifeline')
That's the great thing music has over other art forms - It can be interpreted and redone over and over again - each time having the potential to be better than before. Try that with a painting or sculpture...
Music - Just enjoy it!

Woah, woah woah, steady on there hedge hog. Weird Al Yankovic does not count. Not exactly cover versions if you know what i mean. Though his track 'Eat It' is very good. Ive been trying to find some Gun stuff. I had a 12inch single of theirs "Better Days" and the B Side had two very good tracks on it. Cant find any of their stuff anywhere.

One Bad Pig did a really cool punk cover of Johnny Cash's "Man in Black" (on there 1991 album "I Scream Sunday"). The coolest part is that Johnny Cash sang with them on the song.
