So this may be a very simple question and maybe I just didn't try hard enough....but I can't seem to get the stock mufflers off. Is there a special way to do it? I tried to loosen the bolt that tightens the clamp around the muffler and holds them on and I couldn't get it to budge one bit.

The bolts back by the pegs are the same bolts that hold the passenger peg mount on. Pull the exhaust hanger bracket off the rubber piece by kind of turning the whole pipe (be careful on the shifter side, the shift arm on the primary doesn't leave you much room to play and you don't want to put pressure on that or scratch up the pipe.)Then just wiggle slightly and pull straight back and it should slide off fairly easily.

If I read this right, the muffler clamp bolt could use some WD-40. Spray it down and let it soak overnight. Use your longest wrench or ratchet or slip a pipe over a short one to give you leverage.

well Duh, I read it as the clamp was loose but the pipe wouldn't come off. Another idea is to get the pipes hot and try to turn the bolt but keep focused so you don't grab the hot headers and wait for them to cool before grabbing the pipe to pull it off.

There are 2 allenhead screws on the backsides of the mufflers (silencers) holding them to a black bracket behind the rear peg hanger. Be careful undoing these because the nuts inside the mufflers break loose very easily.

Ya, what Brian said. If I remember correctly, watch the position of the left side clamp bolt when refitting the (new) muffler so it doesn't interfere when the side stand is in the "up" position. I can't remember why I know that .

Also like GB said the rear bracket bolt/nut assembly sometimes spins with the nut on the inside. A quick spot of heat from a propane torch can, may loosen the nut-tight stuff in there. I can't remember how I know that either

So what do you and the other "eons" call it ??? I think the technical term is that blue stuff, trained mechanics might use the loose term loctite, but where's the sport in that?

Of all the "suggestions" I see here, only one addressed the fact that the rear peg hangers have to come off in order to remove the exhaust pipes. The black brackets that support the rear of the pipes attach behind the rear foot peg hangers. Remove the hangers (the foot pegs remain attached to the hangers), then you can pull the exhaust bracket off, being careful not to loose the inner and outer rubber mounts that you will need to reinstall the pipes.

Once you get the rear brackets loosed, you can use the leverage of the bracket to help "turn" the pipes back and forth to work them off the header pipes. Unless you need to re-use the black brackets on some other pipes, there should be no need to remove them from the pipes themselves.

On and off, changing the pipes should not be more than a 10 minute job, excluding time to wipe them down and polish off the finger prints or road grime. It is fairly starightforward. Takes a 13 mm wrench or socket on the clamp bolts, and a 12 mm on the rear peg hanger bolts. And maybe some black silicone high-heat sealant around the header pipes on re-install - just a smear is all you will need.

By the way, if you like the looks of the bike better without the rear peg hangers, but don't want to do without the pegs, they will screw right into the hole where the bottom hanger bolt goes. This way, you keep the pegs, hold the pipe brackets in place and lower the pegs a little.
