Kill them (bad guys & girls) all and let God sort 'em out.
As a society, we have an obligation to the present and future members to protect ourselves against any and all forces which present a threat to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The Cold War is a prime example of how deterrence (sp) works. If the bad guys aren't inhibited by the threat of death as punishment for a crime, then kill them for comitting the crime. End result? Fewer bad guys by attrition or fear of the punishment.
