Howdy folks,
I am looking at a '03 America at my local dealer. I'd like to put louder pipes on it and they want to sell me Bubs and a performance upgrade/tuneup for $800. Seems a little steep to me. Whattaya think?
Also I see TORS on ebay for $250-350. One seller says that these pipes don't require re-working the carbs, just slip em' on and go. Is this correct? I have my doubts.
Any ideas on what a decent price for carb jetting? I'm in the North East USA.
Thanks

The Triumph pipes will work without rejetting. But, since these engines are already running as lean as possible (or maybe a little leaner) to meet emission standards, a size or two bigger main jets will make it run even better.

I have TORs on mine and upped the jets a little. Works fine for me.

Same here. Upped the mains from 120s to 130s - have not pulled the plugs since, bit I should to check the color. The 125s I tried first were still too lean (plugs were snow white), but the bike ran fine, even with the 120 mains. She is definitely "free-er" now.

Though it helps to have some basic hand tools and the Triumph Service Manual, it really was not that difficult to re-jet it myself. Save your money for gear, gas, and tires.

i put bubs on my '07 america and did not re-jet,,runs fine. got tired of the noise and have new tors now, haven't installed yet, not planning on jetting with them either. i've been through this twice with yamahas fooling with trying to get the right jet in there,,,,and dropping 8-10 mpg. i'm gonna leave well enough alone,,if i want to go faster, i'll ride my adventurer.

I just added TORs to my 2005 America. The air injection has been removed but I do get popping on deceleration. Any suggestions?

you probably need to adjust the mixture screws, also be sure you have a good seal where the headers meet the pipes.

After adding TORs last August, and rejetting from 120 mains to 125s, then to 130s, I still wasn't getting any color to the spark plugs though the bike ran fine. I could stand the noise, but the popping on decell was still a little much. After going to the 130 mains, my clutch slipped when rolling on over 80 mph, so I installed Barnett springs and cured that.

I pulled the plugs Sunday for the first time since installing the 130 mains, after several hundred miles, and still white as a piece of paper.

So I put the stock pipes back on. I know that will richen her up - I'll have to check plug color later to see how much. I made a 60-mile round trip across town Sunday night and she runs great, but not quite as "free", and other than some intake howl, quiet as a mouse. That never bothered me before, and I'm telling myself that it does not bother me now....or does it?

I never opened the pilots more than 2 1/2 turns out, and though more may have quieted some of the popping, I don't think it would have added any plug color, and I simply did not want to re-jet again even though what I had done already seemed to only have a minimal effect on fuel economy - was still getting 140+ miles before hitting reserve...

Easy enough to change the pipes back again if I want, but I am going to see what this does for plug color first.

I have a wide open bottom in my airbox - hole the same size as the open bottom of the UNI filter. If I had anything to do over again, I would have gone with a smaller airbox and filter opening, or maybe drilled 3 smaller holes in the bottom rather than one big one. Don't ask me why....

I do enjoy wrenching on this thing, and have learned a lot, and fear a lot less now about jumping off into something - I don't think the fuel-injected bikes are going to be quite as entertaining when not being ridden!

my previous TBA had the short TOR's and slightly bigger jets (can't remember at this point) and worked like a charm!

07 TBA Pacific Blue and White.. stock for now! A bike has half the wheels my cage does.. but 3x the fun factor

Thanks for the suggestions. I will check the seal and also see how the plugs look.

My personal experience (Running short tapered TORs) was that drilling the airbox and putting in a larger main jet (initially 130) resulted in a lean condition at partial throttle. You might try installing TBS or Thruxton needles to richen up the mid range throttle response. Right now I am running 125 mains and Thrux needles with the drilled airbox and short TOR's. The needle swap is relatively easy compared with changing out the jets, so don't be afraid to try it. Even putting a shim under the stock needle should help the symptoms described.
