I was doing an edit when you were typing Bill. How are you up so late at your advanced age? The plastics on a GSX-R are right pricey are they not. They are not on the list. I think its better to sell the bike retail to the insurance company than to the public. They drop like a rock in depreciated value.

Since you want to compare states here's the quote from the Texas Department of Public Safety: Quote:
Studies indicate that in crashes, motorcycle riders and passengers are more likely to be seriously injured or killed than automobile operators or passengers. Your chance of reaching your destination safely is directly related to the preparation you do before the ride. You need to mentally prepare by being alert, free of stress, sober, and ready for riding.
Head Protection. A helmet protects you against head injury, windblast, cold, sunburn, flying objects, and hearing loss. Head injuries account for the majority of motorcycle fatalities. Without a helmet, you are five times more likely to sustain a critical head injury in a crash.
74 riders died in Alabama in 2007 and 285 died in Texas in 2007. Do your own math.
The bottom line is that I don't care if you choose to crack your skull wide open, that's your choice and you're welcome to make it. You just need to release the rest of us from the responsibility of having to follow up if your choice turns sour.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

Of everything I've read in this thread, THIS pretty much says it all about the so-called "American Mindset" alright!
(however, I have to ask...Considering that whenever somebody does something stupid such as riding without a helmet, they're most likely NOT usin' their brain, RIGHT?! And so I really wonder if "American MINDset" would be the proper choice of words here, HUH???!!!)

Texas has 23,000,000 people and Alabama has 4.6 million. 5x more population. 74*5= 370 Texas has 23% fewer fatal accidents on bikes than Alabama with limited helmet laws. And its not riding conditions as we have 3 of the 10 largest cities in America. So, I did the math fun fight but no beer or bikes so lets quit. I surrender.

Yup ...we can be as stupid as we want to be if the law allows it.
Perhaps smoking cigarretes should be "against the law" Imagine the drop in lung cancer "costs" over the next 25 years if no one was allowed to smoke by law.
Imagine the outrage if some "stupid" legislator would attempt that. Then imagine how much longer he would be in office.
Its all relative hypocrisy here.
I live in Arizona so screw all of you safety nuts. (figuratively speaking of course)
ABATE is alive and well in AZ with active chapters throughout the state to protect the rights of motorcyclists and to keep alive the idea of "Let the rider decide"

Arizona! What a wonderful state. The wife and I spent a week in your wonderful state! As soon as we crossed the state line at Bullhead City, the helmets came off. We rode the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and all of the roads were, what can I say, the best maintained I have ever rode on! I got a kick out of some of the stores where they had you check your weapons in. If I were ever to retire, thats where I would plant my butt! The last of the truely free states.

Reminds me of the old adage, " There are lies, dam lies, and then there are statistics. A classic from the past... (sorry, I can't remember the state, I think my home of Iowa during the 80s) A state had a helmet law. "X" amount of deaths occurred on motorcycles. After a few years of a this helmet law, vocal opposition from groups like ABATE caused the helmet law to be repealed. The following year, pro helmet lawyer types pointed out that helmet fatalities had DOUBLED since the law requiring use of a helmet was repealed. What the pro-helmet crowd failed to mention was that Motorcycle registrations had actually QUADRIPLED during the same time period. (effectively halving the mortality rate, not doubling it) For the record, I believe that a helmet is a good thing, I just personally don't like them, I wear them when I travel or just feel guilty about not doing so.

Well....It do beat the Soviet Socialist Republic of Kalifornia....thats for sure. Az is not perfect but at least when Kalifornia disappears into the Pacific after one of those "faults" lets go....we will finally get that beachfront we all hunger for.

Sorry Kevin, but I've got some bad news for ya, ol' buddy. The day after Judie and I move to Prescott, THAT'S when "Kalifornia" will drop off into the Pacific. BUT unfortunately for you, Tucson will still remain one hot, dry and desolate piece of real estate out in the middle of a desert, because my friend, naturally cooler, more beautiful and pine tree laden PRESCOTT is where the new beachfront property will then be(kind of like a whole new Big Sur, you see), which will just add to it's already more desirable locale! (dang it, dude...you just can't win, can ya?!)

Yup. I knew that being located where we are that I'd have to travel a bit to get to the new beach.
We can see Pine trees and mountainous terrain with just a short sortie up to Mt Lemmon though in the Summer.

Wow, I'm going to be down your way soon and was kind of looking forward to going naked but that just changed my mind.
I've been in a few places where I've felt safe not wearing a helmet (mostly bike week when bikes out number the cars. i.e. they see you). Charleston is NOT one of those places.
It's not so much that the drivers are worse, so much as the roads lend people to random lane changes and last minute changes in direction. Road conditions in Chas are horrible, and the design of many intersections border on insanity.
I always go with a helmet, jacket and denim in chas.

Helmets can go either way, they can prevent head injury in some cases but cause severe back and neck injury. I don't remember numbers anymore, but it is something like a std helmet in a 35moh crash is equal to about 400lbs of weight being on your head.
I saw above about people giving guys ****** for wearing helmets. I choose not to wear one but I don't ridicule anyone for wearing them. When Tom came up for me to fix his bike we went for a ride after I did so and he wore one.

I really like my leather jacket but I'm becoming more and more enamored over my Cortex CSX jacket ever time I ride with it. The armor is not at all intrusive and now I really have to think about it notice it. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try the vent system later this month but there are plenty of zippers and it seems like it should be pretty comfy. Of course, I reserve the right to grumble when the temps get to 100

I rode last summer with a mesh jacket w/armor(a tourmaster draft)in 90-100 degree weather in eastern washington with only t-shirt under and was fine..just drink 16 ounces of water every hour to keep hydrated. This summer I bought a triumph raptor 2 mesh and will be fine wearing it also.BTW..last summer after riding 6 hours from the Nelson Raid(90+0,when I crossed snoqualmie pass to 75 degree weather I had to stop and put long sleve fleece shirt as I was cold!!All this gear has elbow, shoulder and back pads!!

Mesh jackets are the way to go for hot weather riding. I wear one every time I get on the bike in the summertime here. That's 117 degree heat. It actually keeps me a little cooler as I don't have the sun directly on my skin. It's kind of like riding in the shade And the full face helmet negates the "blast furnace" effect of 117 degree air at 80 mph.

I read somewhere that a mesh jacket will actually keep you cooler than just a Tshirt because without SOME windblocking, your sweat evaporates TOO quickly to actually cool you efficiently, so you sweat more and dehydrate much quicker too. I would imagine sitting in traffic is a different story, but for moving.. it's good

Okay Larry, did I go into any political rant in my above plea for Ian and Kevin to please consider making a CHOICE to wear a helmet when they ride their motorcycles???
I don't THINK so, well not other than jabbin' Kevin about his own tagline around here, WHICH BTW being a "jingoist", meaning a devout NATIONALIST in essence REALLY doesn't have that much to do with being a "conservative" or NOT.
So let's count up the number of political references in your above response:
(1)-"left wing"(BTW...I'm not, if that's what you're thinking...but I'm guessin' anybody who you might feel is less conservative than you are...and I'm ALSO guessin' that that's a WHOLE LOT O' PEOPLE OUT THERE...is "naturally a left-winger by default", RIGHT?!)
(2)"Nancy Polist"[sic...but I know it was mis-spelled on purpose]
(3)"Harry Reid"
(4)"Kalifornia socialists"[sic...and I again know it was mis-spelled on purposed]
(5)"conservatives"
(6)"Dick Chaney"
(7)"Teddy Kennedy"
(8)"Barack Osama"[sic...and again I know that it was mis-spelled on purpose....and come on Larry, this one is even beneath you...and you know what I mean]...but you're right, Mr. OBama sucks in bowling alright.(BTW, have I ever mentioned to ya before that I once carried a 192 average in a scratch league?...pretty good, huh?!)
And so...what is it with you anyway? Does EVERY friggin' thing with you have to be a BLATANT political rant of some sort???
(Dude, I'm tellin' ya...keep this up and I'll be pleadin' with YOU to NOT wear a helmet whenever YOU ride YOUR motorcycle!!!)

I choose to dress for a crash & not for the ride. Full gear (head to toe), just about every time. I choose to do it because I understand the vulnerabilities, risks, & consequences. But you know what, I would be rather p1ssed if some nanny law made it mandatory.
