Anybody else had a problem with their Speedo. Mine shows random speeds ... According to the speedo I rode into the Garage at 85 MPH lastnight.

The bike shop I bought the TBA from(not a Triumph dealer) said that this was a common know problem on the Americas, but I cannot find any mention of it on here.

It is rare though not common. The cable is broke or the pickup on the wheel is not right. Touble shoot? Take the front wheel off. Also examine the speedo side.

A few of the earlier America's had a problem with the speedo and when I say few I mean few, but since then nothing. First I would look at your speedo cable. There is a screw holding the cable to the cable speedo drive at the front wheel. Unscrew that and pull the cable out of the drive to see if the end has broken off or bent, next take a look at the other end going into the speedo. If both ends are okay then you've got a problem. If not the cable is a lot cheaper to buy than a new speedo.

I tried a KMH speedo on it and that worked fine ... the bike is a 2002, so I must be one of the unlucky ones.

Thanks for the quick replies

The worm gear, that little L shaped deal at the speedo is what usually goes bad. Roll it backward slowly when in neutral and not running to hear it. A pepper grinder noise will tell you if its the worm gear. They are 40 bucks vs. 340 bucks for a new speedo that does not come with the worm gear.

Yeh mine does the same thing i have just learnt to live with it. I actually asked my local dealer about it but apparently he had never heard of the problem.
I refuse to cough up the money for a new one and have been looking for an alternative digital speedo but to date have not found anything I like.

Sounds like it may need a little light oil inside. You might be able to spray some in through the hole where the light goes. Don't give it too much though.

My speedo is intermittently inaccurate. I ride a 2003 speedmaster with 7500 mi. Last summer I noticed I was doing about 100 mph going down my street. further examination condemned the speedo. Luckily I don't care too much, eventually I'll get around to removing it; it's just slowing me down anyway.

It's not just my bike then ... I have put on a KMH speedo as supplied by the bike shop.

They have promised to get me a new MPH clock.
