Just put EPCO pipes on an 04 Speedmaster. Started it up & it definitely needs the carbs done. I kept the UNI off and left the Snorkel in just to hear it run. Was told to start at 130/42 & consider TBS needles. Are they the same as Thruxton needles? Also considering drilling the air box, how much will that change my set up. Also, is there such a thing as a 40 pilot?

No Thuxton and TBS needles are different I didn't find it but there was a pic of the 3 next to each other posted once.
Yes a 40 pilot is possible but you would be going the wrong direction for your set up. Probably stay with the 42 unless you decide to remove or cut your air box.Just adjust the mixture screws. If you open up the intake some then might go to 45.130 main sounds close depending on your elevation for your set up. there again might have to go larger if you open up your intake more.

My obsession gets the best of me sometimes. What I saw after webing around is the Truxton needles seem to be closer to the same length. Jenk's claims they help with midrange performance. So, Where can I find Thruxton needles that don't cost me as much to ship them as they cost?

I'd start with the TBS needles and see how she runs. Then if it still feels a little lean in the midrange you could switch to the Thruxton needles and see how they work out. Its relatively easy to switch out the needles, and there is a fair amount of overlap between the main jet choice and the needles you run. So sometimes a 125 main and thrux needles works out to be not much different from a 130 main and shimmed stock needles. I tried a bunch of combinations while running short TORS and a drilled airbox and may end up experimenting more if I ever get around to doing the freak kit. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Decided to start with shimmed stock needles, then move to TBS if warranted. Decided it's a work in progress want to see how the stock needles feel first. Doing the Job this weekend, Weather is supposed to be nice.
Thanks

Best way to proceed is to make 1 change at a time and see how it runs and where to go next. If you do multiple changes at a time you won't know what was good and what was bad.

If you go with the TBS needles you'll have to drill your airbox and remove the snorkle. I have an 04 and I ran the TBS for a while. I found the best setup to be 132 mains, 45 pilots, drilled airbox with UNI filter and snorkle removed. I moved back to stock needles with 1 shim and the bike seems to be a little happier at the high end. I did lose a little mid range response but not enough to make me want to switch back.

Its not the length, its the diameter. Thinner needle allows more fuel. I don't know why they are different lengths.

Went with 130/42/Stock Needles with 2 Shims/2.5 turns on Mixture Screws. Raining & Cold did not take her out. I Did find a Brass Spacer/Insert on the floor was flat on one end the length was approx 1/4" & inner diameter about 3/8". Thought it probably went between the Fender & Air box. Any Ideas? Tried to post a Pic, but couldn't figure out how. Thanks everyone for your help. Saved some cash, doin it myself. Lonzo Love the EPCO's.

I have the airbox out so I might as well look at the carbs. I have a 2002 BA, AI removed, snorkles removed, dam cut down, stock mufflers with 2 baffes removed, elevation 1,000' Will this have to be rejetted. What are your suggestions? Why do you replace the needle with TBS? Do you recomment this I do this?

Did you remove the entire jet assembly or just the jet? Because that sounds a lot like the collar that fits above the jet...

In that picture, looks like aluminum or something. When mine fell out, it was definitely brass. Hittman, if that's the part you are talking about, it absolutely will not run right without it.

Wow. Old thread resurrection.
while perusing the archives for needle info, I realized that your "...Brass Spacer/Insert on the floor..." does indeed go between the fender and air box.
