I have just had a very short call from the national distributor in Greece for Triumph (a friend of mine) whom I saw last week (actually, he got his assistant to call me) who gave me the following much-awaited info on the mid-sized Triumph cruiser: a/ It will be called the THUNDERBIRD. b/ It will be a 1600cc TWIN. c/ It will be WATERCOOLED. d/ It will have 6 gears. e/ It will have EFI disguised as carbs. f/ It will produce 95 hp. g/ They will be officially launched in September '08. They ordered six initial units today. That's it folks! (Remember where you read this first)

In June, 2007 Bedouin told us the "1500" was coming in September 2007 as a 2008 model. You can look it up.

It will be belt drive. I'm surprised at the name but I have it from a good source there will be over 225 accessories available. This is the largest amount ever offerd by Triumph. Also, a new line of clothing with American sizes in mind.

Yep Actually what it means is the dealers were complaining that the sizes were very inconsistent and an XL T-Shirt was the size of a medium T-shirt here in the US. A Triumph rep told me that at the Boston show.

This is the real deal. Ask your dealer, the US dealers can start ordering in June for September delivery.

Yep Ian, that spy-pic posted around here a few weeks back looked almost exactly as these reported details by Thanassis and Ron sound here, don't they?!
Well, all I can say is IF that spy-pic WAS somewhat accurate, I SURE hope they do a much better job of hiding that big ol' ugly radiator, AND I sure hope that the lack of finning around the cylinder barrels is also addressed before September comes around, or I TOO will be a bit disappointed.
And because that bike looked at least to me to be pretty close to production quality, I think I WILL be a bit disapointed.
(still hope I'm wrong though...but I rarely am, ya know)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Why would you put fins on a liquid-cooled bike? Does the Rocket have fins? Just wondering, you know?

The spy picture is not accurate. That was a prototype with shaft drive that will never see production. According to my source the engine resembles our engines. As far as the radiator, I hope it's not the same. I hope they made it long and narrow and recessed into the frame. Only time will tell if this bike is a looker.

For the same reason you'd make EFI look like a carb.

Exactly, Ron! Good answer!
You see Kevin, that there RocketIII motor ain't exactly a "triumph of aesthetics", now is it?! You see, slab-sided and flat portions of aluminum where inside the combustion process takes place and sitting openly out there for the world to see will ever be as pleasing to the eye as rows of finning would...right?!
(or do I need to post comparative pictures for ya here of the RocketIII's engine or almost ANY watercooled motorcycle's engine without at least traces of said finning, and then a picture of our Bonneville-line engine to prove my point?)
When Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki added finning to their watercooled V-Twin cruisers, you don't think it was really to help cool those bikes ONLY, do ya?! Nope! They added the finning to give it a more "classic" air-cooled look because the vast majority of people LIKE that look!

Ah, my good man ... you doubt my credibility?
Um ... please read my original post again more carefully.
This is what my post said on in June 2007 (which you are referring to), which BTW, was me translating an article from a Greek magazine:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is an excerpt from an article by motorcycle guru/journalist Alan Cathcart, (also correspondent to a Greek m/c magazine).
Quote,
The new Triumph Street Triple 675 ...
... will be the first in a series of new models produced by the British manufacturer. Amongst them, we'll see the Rocket III Tourer, the 1.500cc Parallel Twin cruiser, the dual-purpose Tiger Cub 675 and the 3-cylinder Daytona 1100 Superbike.
... For 2008, Triumph is expecting to launch a range of 1.500cc parallel twin models it has been developing over the last 4 years, which will probably have shaft drives.
Unquote
He goes on to mention that within the 1.500cc range, their will be a Speedmaster-like cruiser and the Mega-Bonneville with an 8-valve engine.
Launch time is September yes? Not too long now ... ---------------------------------------------------------
Link to original post translating Alan Cathcart's article.
We were speculating a lot during this period.
Another example ...
The previous (lesser) mystery we were speculating on in Sept 06 were the changes to the America/Speedmaster models.
Again the national distributor here gave me some info (and I immediately reported it here, again a FIRST as some will recall ) which turned out to be SPOT ON!
What I said:
----------------------------------------------- Extra! Extra! Read all about it!
Ok guys, here's the scoop for the day:
I have just had a word with the National distributor in Greece for Triumph who tells me the following:
Regarding the larger capacity cruiser - Triumph is only talking about it - nothing yet. This translates that it is in development but unlikely for 2007 (unless launched mid-season)
The America changes for 2007: The 865 cc motor. Cast wheels. Adjustable hand controls (clutch and brake). Larger pillion seat. Polished lower forks. Changes to the pillion footrest hangers (I didn't quite get the difference).
The Speedmaster changes for 2007: Different cast wheels. Polished lower forks. Changes to the pillion footrest hangers (I didn't quite get the difference). Blackened cylinder heads (totally black including cooling fins or something???)
This your BA.COM correspondent "Da Bedouin" from the Meditteranean, signing out. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
... and the original Link to post/thread.
Just ... for the record.
Now, to give credit where credit is due.
If the info given to me today proves correct, then I believe Dwight gave us the Thunderbird name (around a year ago) to us from one of his sources and Yota has been consistent with his claim that it will be 1600cc.
Again, this your BA.COM correspondent "Da Bedouin" from the Meditteranean ... signing out.

Yeah, Yeah. I still think my next bike will be a Moto Guzzi Norge (in addition to the SM of course), if my wife's comfortable on it that is This is a new bike. I don't understand the disappointment expressed by some that it's not a "bigger, better America" It will apparently be a modern engineered, mid sized (1600cc is "mid" sheesh) cruiser. Get over it. Thanks Thanassis

BUT Bill my good friend..."modern engineered" doesn't necessarily have to mean "aesthetically-challenged", ya know sir?!
AND...yes...it COULD end up being just THAT, which if the "history of slow sales"(take for instance the amount of V-Rods sold by Harley against their air-cooled line) tells us anything, it's that "classic good looks" will always sell better than "modern engineering" will when it comes to "Cruisers"!

Since I posted it I'll attempt to answer your question. Quote:
Why must we have another Big foot posting??? please when (if)the bike comes out then can we talk about it???
a/ Because I now genuinely consider this to be reliable information. b/ Because some of us are genuinely interested in both the bike and it's specifications. Some have been waiting a long time. Whether or not anyone eventually buys it is irrelevent. c/ Because this may affect some people's financial and/or other short or long-term plans. d/ Because I like to contribute to this site whenever I can. I wouldn't want to have this info (especially as I consider it to be accurate/reliable) and keep it to myself. e/ Because I don't participate in any other Triumph-lovers forum (until one is created) and I prefer discussing it with a bunch of Triumph lovers that I "sort of" know. f/ Because I start a thread 5 or 6 times a year (and not a day) and I choose this to be one of them.

Hmmm... Let me tally up the score after that first volley. Thanassis - 1 Chris - 0 Fight nice boys Now, ain't this better than determining the benefit of toddler spankin' and missing ear buds, and marrying the girl of you mothers dreams? I think so. Seems so much more relevant to have a heated discusion over something Tiumph. How 'bout y'all & yunz?

I wasn't going to post this but I feel compelled. I've spoken to several dealers and a Triumph Rep who all told me the same thing. In fact one dealer told me they're actually going to Hinkley for the unveiling in June. Why would they tell me this if it wasn't true. They other thing is all the details they told me match Thanassis' details. I realize there have been many posting speculating the bike was coming. Maybe Triumph delayed the production for some reason or another but we all knew it was coming. Now we have reliable sources corroborating that it's here and you don't want to talk about the news. Give me a break, what do you want to talk about? This is the Other Bike forum isn't it?

1730 Hey, here's an idea! How about a moratorium on these Mystery Bike threads until TRIUMPH announces the release? If it's REALLY coming in June, that's only 4 months off. You guys can wait that long, RIGHT?

I agree, let's hold off the party until she arrives. And, using the name Thunderbird? Stooooopid. It will confuse people. I know they reuse names, but when was the last Rocket made? The T'bird is/was a very recent model and re-using the name so soon with such a vastly different machine doesn't make sense. There, you heard it here first.

I'm with you on the Thunderbird name. It will confuse people and they could have called it a Speed Twin or maybe the Hurricane.

The grapevine has it that it was originally designed to be a 5-speed gearbox. Then they switched to a 6-speed and had to go through the testing phases again. Perhaps this is the reason.

It could have been worse. I think at some time there was speculation about the name being Speedmaster (or was that Pipedr's very believable concoction? ).

Ah, yes. I'll own-up to that one. It was during the ever-memorable 'Dazco Days' or was it 'Daze'- yes it was me - If you recall, the radiator was under the seat. I'm a very inovative dreamer.

I wholeheartedly agree with the aesthetics take there Dwight. I do really hope that this is a good looking, well engineered bike. Of course judgment will be reserved until the official unveiling. The point being that is a different bike than the SM/America. I don't want to see something that is just a bigger version of the same thing, or a smaller version of a different thing. Who knows? Maybe this will change my mind about the next bike (it sounds promising )
