Hi All: New to site have recently purchased 2004 speedy, During a realy good going over noticed a fair bit of movement in the rear sproket hub, I belive they call it the cush drive rubber. Any body changed theres and what would be an average klm's, This speedy only has 7000 on it so seems a little odd to me, or the guy i purchased from had given it a bit of hard time. Regards Ric
2004 Speedy, Treat em mean to keep em keen.

Hi Rick The majority on here swop there cushdrives rubbers for the Thunderbird one, checkout the tech vault, probably someone will give you the part number for it.. I have done 12,000 on mine and it is a bit slack, but they seem to be loose in the first place. The Thunderbird one seems to be a very tight fit on all accounts.. Found it Quote:
The rear wheel uses a sprocket carrier mated to the hub. Between the carrier and the hub a series of rubber blocks resides. The so called Cush Drive. The slop refers to the clearance between the blocks of rubber and each of either the sprocket carrier or/and the rear hub.
Grasping the rear sprocket and trying to rotate it forward or aft, will give you an idea of the clearance.
Various factors* may cause this, but the overriding cause seems to be the cush drive rubbers. The OEM ones are ever so slightly too small. Members have found that by ordering and installing the Thunderbird cush drive rubbers the issue goes away. The Tbird part # is T2012211.
*Other causes are loose chains, worn out chains/sprockets.

The cush drive on my 2007 Speedy is knackered after 3000 miles. Waiting from a call from my dealer to get it replaced under warranty. Strangely, they compared it to another Speedy they had in their showroom up for sale with approx the same mileage as mine. That was knackered as well!!! All a bit concerning.

I got my dealer to replace mine on warranty at 9000 miles. It seemed to have too much slop and I don't ride the bike hard. They replaced with the Thunderbird one, which as stated above, may be tighter than a brand new stock one. Triumph now has the Thunderbird one shown as the warranty replacement. I wonder if they have changed them on newer models?

some one posted that when ordering a replacement they automaticly got the Tbird rubber. Don't know if it was a smart dealer or a mistake or if the Tbird rubber replaced the OEM.

Yous guys and gals that shim your cush drives. Fine. Just make sure that at the next tire change the monkey doing the change out takes the time to re-shim it. Come on will ya. What is 80 bucks? Heck that is not even the price of some of that Kuryakyn caca. The last time I had the monkey change my tires he put the old flatted out tube under the rear tire. I at least brought the wheels in so there was none of this ride it and blame it on me. I discovered the moneys grab ****** sheet as I was trying to sort through his fish tackle box for a carrier hub o-ring and heard the HISSSSSS.

The TBird cush drive is only $76.86 from Bike Bandit...might as well upgrade while you're doing the job.

All it means is put some sort of rubber to stop the movement, I should imagine an old innertube would suffice or pieces of rubber cut to fit properly either side of the cush rubbers itself, I myself will order a T bird one and see what that is like..

If your cush drive gets some slop in it some guys have been cutting pieces of leather to go inbetween the sprocket hub fingers and the rubber to take out the slop.

I would probably put the leather in and save the money but I'm cheap. I wouldn't probably mess with it even if there was slop unless I had to.

Be sure to measure the slop with a digital micrometer too Al.

I have a little over 19,000 on my speedmaster and it seems pretty loose but I noticed it to have slack when I changed out my first rear tire at 14,000. Thanks for the heads up on the T-bird replacement. gary

my luck is when i correct one issue, another pops up. my cush has always been a little sloppy. will putting the t-bird rubbers in put more strain on the clutch, especially in low gear or down shifting?

Put your hands in front of you. Spread your fingers out as far as they will go. Put the fingers of your right hand between the fingers of your left hand out near the ends of your fingers. Move your hands back and forth so your fingers hit each other. That is the stock cush drive. Do the same thing only put your fingers down to where they come out of your hands. Move them back and forth. That is the T-Bird cush drive.... (Just the thought of everyone doing this is going to keep me chuckling for days...)

1) What are the effects on performnace with a worn/sloppy Cush Drive. That is what are the symptoms.
2) How much "slop" is normal. I have about 13mm (1/2in)

I believe the T-bird cush mod is money well spent. For starters changing into neutral works 1st time every time and the bike just feels so much more solid when changing gears and not sloppy. I must admit with the cush driver mod I also changed sprockets and went a size up in chain as well as putting a scott oiler on. Now I think the drive aspects of my bike are sorted well and truely. I would recommend the tbird cush to anyone who asked.

I knew mine was gone at 24,700 miles because, some of the rubber pieces that were originally connected were rotted. $76.86 seems to be the standard price from the dealer. It's going to cost me $90.39 including tax and shipping. Performance Triumph of OKC, said they don't stock these because they don't wear out that often. I'm not sure that is true. If some Speedmasters are going through them at 3,000 miles, it would seem like they would keep a few on hand.

Paul, Those boys on Rt66 are OK. But call Myra at Machines in Motion in Cumming Georgia. You'll like the attitude and the prices. Think about those other goodies you might want and make the order worthwhile. So Paul, have any inert bombs fall around you lately? Man, that is messed up.

Yeah, I should have thought of that Moe. Machines in Motion is a great dealership. I thought I could get it faster ordering from a dealer in OK. and gave them my credit card info., THEN thought of out of state dealers. Duuuh... Inert Bombs? Did I miss the news again.

You can order that cush drive from www.bikebandit.com along with some other toys.Good luck.It does help.I think the sloppy cush drive is harder on the whole drive train including the chain.
