guitar. the Larrivée parlor got to come home today. arrived in town yesterday--but had to work late last night. too late to retrieve himherguitar. took a few quickpics. not great shots; but i don't want to see anyone tack on that pithy little smiley cluster about the post being worthless without photos. first impressions are wide and varied. definitely needs a sharihands set up. new saddle, maybe nut too, end pins, strings... big sound for a little box. too tired to really put my all into himherguitar tonight. i know by the label design the guitar was built sometime between 1995 and last week. wrote to Larrivée to request a manufacture date.

Is that a mahogany back and western red cedar top? A heavy set of strings tuned down a full step might sound really big and bold (but I usually see these set up as high string units for shimmer over the top of a dreadnaught base track). No matter, it's a sweet treat all the same.

Ed, Mahogany back and sides, Sitka Spruce top. i think it's strung up with light's now. i am definitely looking to go heavier. i run the Martin and the big Larrivée with 13s. i want more boom and bottom out of this kid. it's also wired for sound--but i haven't plugged in yet. waiting to bring the Fishman home. (say, know anyone who wants/needs a very cool Fender Acoustasonic 30 DSB?) Wade, i know it's shaped like a girl, but things are not always as the naked eye perceives them... and you know who to ask about that . Mike, some Larrivées are now considered 'collectible.' this is not quite on that list--though this particular model is no longer in production. in the sense of gatheringcollectingandacquiring guitars to play? then you can consider it part of my collectivecollection. Gordie, it's nice to have a BC issue. the other Larri is a California child. Chy...GAS...always have GAS. sometimes its under control. sometimes its not. then there's always GSA(guitarseparationanxiety.) Matt, i think you'll like the cutaway on the Tak. Becky, teachers. some of the worst influences on my life. a couple of wonderful ones over the years. but the bad ones? nuff said.

The scale is much shorter so you could easily put on 13s (or heavier) and not notice an increase in string tension; some folks like "bluegrass" sets with heavy bottoms and light tops to try and balance the voice but so much of that depends on your right hand that only you can decide. You might even have to tune it up a half step to get it to voice properly; I've seen 24" scale necks on wee boomers that were tuned up a minor third to compensate and they sang a pretty tune. I'd definitely attack the strings and truss rod before I went after the nut or saddle since these small fry change so radically with minor adjustments.

Shari, Is that a 000 or a OM model? I love that size guitar. Had an old Washburn similar in size and traded for a Harptone dreadnaught body. Wish I still had that one too! Congrats on your new baby.

Congrats on your new baby.
good question. Larrivée classifies it as a Parlor size. here are the dimensions/measurements(for those of you convinced hesheit is a girl): -Upper bout is 9 3/8" wide X 3 1/2" deep at neck block -Waist is7 3/4" -Lower bout is 13 1/8" wide X 3 1/2" deep at heel block -String spacing at saddle is 2 3/16" -Nut width is 1 11/16"
gonna re-string now(with 12s)
i'll get back with a new string sound report a little later.

I would definatley go with a bone nut and saddle. If it doesn't have them already. I know my d18v didn't come with bone, if you can believe that. Buffaloe horn pins may add some nice bottom end. "Elixer Strings."

EXP's sound better than elixir's, and cleartone's are just amazing. I keep 12''s cleartones on my Taylor 310.

different strings, different guitars. Nano's sound great on my martin and bourgeois but awful on my Lowden. I have been dying to try "firewires." I hear only good things about them. The thing about Elixers that I like is that they last longer than most strings I have tried.

i liked cleartones. briefly. cleartones came stock on my LV-09E. went through 3 sets. fast. no longevity for me, and when they were done; they were done...did that make sense? went right back to D'Addario's. Use em on all the hollow wood in the house.
He'll probably be the guitbox i send to GA this year. might try to load up Blue and see how i can get Milo strapped down for the ride--but more than likely he'll get boxed and shipped.

Ask and you shall receive!
elixir = worst strings EVER...absolute crap
EXP = almost as bad
cleartones = best coated string on the market, but still a coated string. Like you said when they're done, they're done...just like Sessions (Everly's B-52s are the BEST electric strings on the market, but they haven't perfected their acoustic strings yet)
Martin = livable
D'Addario = best acoustic strings...period.
As far as your P-05 goes, you'd be advised to try a couple different strings on it. Parlors were originally designed about 120 years ago or something...way before these newfangled guitbox electronics & PA setups. Their dimensions were picked to enhance certain frequencies across the band to enable it to be heard in a Parlor (where people used to go to see live music). They found that if they really enhanced the mid/upper midrange, the guitar would cut thru the mix and be heard.
Knowing this, I'd rule out the Sessions...too dark right out of the box. I, of course, would try D'Addarios first. Try a set of 12's, then a set of 13's. It might like the 12's better...the 13's might get a bit too muddy in the middle. I can't tell you...it all depends on the piece of wood. If D'Addario's are too muddy, try Martin SP 80/20. The 80/20s are brighter than the PhosBronze, and might even ya out a bit. I've never liked the feel of Martin strings though...always kinda felt like they were choking the guitar.

Ah, c'mon buddy, you're spot on about the strings And, 80/20s are the right stuff.

I'd really be tempted to use the bottoms off a set of 13's and the highs from a set of 12s to fine tune it since it's mahogany and a small air volume box.

I smell what you're stepping in...I've never used D'Addario 80/20 sets (strictly use the phosbronze mediums) but these might be something to consider... 80/20s with 12 top end and a beefy 56 on the bottom

Back when I worked as a guitar repairman doing repairs, restorations, and rebuilds, I did pretty extensive work on a customers Froggy Bottom dred from the early 70's. The new one's ain't anywhere as nice as them old ones were.

No one is going to think you are a snob for liking cheap strings. HAHA. I am really surprised at the reaction to elixers though. I play bluegrass and these strings hold up better than any other under that kind of attack. Martins stink.
