Makes no bit of a difference, his brother will continue the dictatorship just like his brother has. Poor Cuban people, will not get a break.

Maybe we can finally get some real cane sugar for our soft drinks and quit all of this high fructose corn syrup nonsense.

Not as poor as they were before Castro kicked the gamblers out.

If they go to a different government system, will America repeal the "wet foot dry foot" policy? Isn't Cubas communism what that is based on?

The current form of government is so firmly entrenched in Cuba that not having a Castro at the top would make no difference.

I am guessing that on the local news tonight I will see the Miami Cubans celebrating... A meaningless gesture at best.

I just watched that on the news. A handful of whites who had their corrupt businesses confiscated.

Problem is, they still have Castro at the top. True, it's his brother, but I'm sure he's not going to start making meaningful changes that affect his quality of life. NO, until both Castros are dead, or until the people in Cuba start pushing for real change as was the case in Europe in '89, I'd say we won't see any shifts here or there.

Yeah, yeah, yeah!!! So now a bunch of people in Miami are gonna dream of leaving this country(U.S.A.) they never really assimilated into, and now hope their fortunes have changed for the better!

BUT, the question still remains...WHAT KIND'A GOLDEN PARACHUTE IS THIS DUDE GONNA GET???

You misread me. It won't make a difference if Castro is there or not. The bureaucracy has a death grip on darn near everything. All that might happen would be a lesser 'official' arising to power and then same-o-same-o.

That same bureaucracy will also keep the people crushed as did the Castros. The people do not have the wherewithal to accomplish a takeover, unfortunately.

Will never happen as the leaders down here have plainly stated. Why should they?

Well, maybe cause, as far as I know, the Constitution of United States of America is just about the best piece of self-governing legislation the world has ever seen. THAT could be reason number one, Phil.

Reason Two: This here's one big old country that one can make their mark in, regardless of where in this world you immigrated from.

Reason Three: There's whole lot o' OPPORTUNITY to do just THAT inside this "big ol' country(which I understand a whole lot o' ex-pat Cubans have taken advantage of since 1959) and yet they.."pine for the Old Country"???

Sorry dude, but I don't care WHERE the h*ll you come from, Mexico, England, Africa, Russia, China, and yes even Cuba...once you see the advantages of being an American and yet you still "pine for your old country"...all I can say is...WHAT'S your freakin' problem, dude?!

Unless we back another rebel as we did Fidel in the 50s. Oh, wait...that's what got them where they are today...
Lifting the embargo would be the best method of breaking the current regime's hold on the people; capitalism along with a free and active press end up being the best motivators for change toward freedom.

Aah!!! Now come on, Ed!!!

You know somethin' like THAT takes a few years, and BESIDES, just how "macho" is thinkin' up rational and long term solutions such as that, anyway???!!!

(americans don't like "wimps", ya know)

Everybody knows you gotta be the "tough guy" in this world, and not use that thing attached to your friggin' neck in order to see american ideas of justice, the rule of law, and free-enterprise to triumph in the LONG RUN!!!

(what's "wrong" with you, dude???!!!)

Yeah, at this point, the Embargo serves no one except politicians trying to keep the Cuban exile population happy, since every other country in the world goes around our "embargo", tourists go there and trade there. Good old Capitalism is what's needed here. Open the Embargo, let goods flow in from all over the world (including Radio/TV broadcasts) and let the next Velvet Revolution begin...

Somehow, I was thinking that Fidel was an alien from the same planet as Dick Clark and would go on for a couple hundred years.

Yeah, he is. He's just in for a skin refit, new organs and an updated beard. Then he'll be rolled out as the "charismatic new leader" of the Revolution....

That goes for anyone who chooses to go to anywhere else. I can never get my head around ex-pats who wax lyrical about their homeland but never go back.

There are also those who condemn other cultures and countries without ever experiencing them. When going home after working in America, I lost count of the people who said "I don't like Americans". When I asked where they had been and who they had met invariably the response was "I've never been there but I've seen it on TV". When coming home from the Middle East, everyone said "I hate Arabs" again not one of them had been there or had even met an 'Arab'!

And those who trace their lineage to wherever and call themselves "(whatever)- Americans (British etc)". No pal, if you were born there or are naturalized, you are American/British etc ! BE PROUD OF THE FACT OR F*#K OFF HOME !

If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

And thus were right back to Brian's very timely quote of Mr. Townsend's, done most memorably of course by the incomparable Mr. Daltrey....

"YeeeAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH,
Meet the new boss,
Same as the old boss."

I saw a picture of FC in the '50s wearing a Washington Senators uniform.
They gave him a tryout-didn't make it.
If he would have had another 15mph on his fastball, the last 50 years would have been very different.

(and I would put up the opening scream of 'Highway Star' against anything)

Oh man! That's just Fidel's bad luck, huh?!

If he could'a waited just few more years, them there steroids could'a probably helped him gain that 15mph fastball the Major Leagues demanded!!!!

(talk 'bout your bad-timin' HUH?!)

Great, Dwight...now I going to have nightmares about Fidel testifying before Congress..."the trainer, he is lying; I never took HGH or Steroids but still my reputation is ruined forever..."

Well...sleep tight, Ed! But I hope you know what Fidel is gonna say in your dreams tonight, don't cha dude???

Yep! He's gonna say somethin' like..."That's RIGHT! I NEVER injected myself with steroids! But what I had that dude OVER THERE injected into me, I'LL NEVER KNOW!!! And so, "technically" I'm right, RIGHT?!"

his retirement will have the same impact on the world as Kim Il-sung's death, nothing.

Sad, but probably true.

On the vids of Fidel on the news he doesn't look to be too long for this world.

Maybe, yeah it's a stretch, Raul won't have the same hold over the bureaucracy that his brother has had.

It just takes a spark to get the fire going.

THAT'S 'cuz Raul ain't got no beard, Bill!!!

It's ALL in the beard, ya know.

Or maybe it's in the fact that an OLD MAN of what, EIGHTY?, was STILL tryin' to fit into his old army fatigues in order to show "how tough" and "vibrant" he still was!

(THAT could be it TOO, ya know)

Hey! Kind'a like Lloyd Bensen once famously said..."WE know Fidel, and Raul, you ain't no Fidel"!

Raul, DUDE: You just GOTTA grow a beard and start wearing your little soldier outfits if you NOW wanna lead those people around on that little island!!!

That's it!!!!!!!!!!

It should have occurred to me.
Ever since I trimmed my beard, little kids don't cry when they see me, and (most) dogs have stopped snarling and backing away with their ears and tails down.

Beards are power.

If Raul doesn't grow one, there may be hope for Cuba after all.
