Just tried a product called "Blue Job" (catchy name). It comes in powder form in a container about the size of a snuff tin. Bought it at the local Harley boutique.
It removed all the gold in less than ten minutes without hurting the chrome. Very little elbow grease required.
A bit pricey at $8.95, but I'm happy and recommend it.
