Thanks for posting-it was great and right on!
Thunder Road was THE movie. In 1962 I traded my 265 Bel Air for a......Corvair. Twenty years old with a wife and baby and that 4:11 rear end really ate that $.30 a gallon gasoline.

I have that car sitting in my garage. Minus the trim above the headlights, different hub caps, airplane hood ornament instead of the chrome strip up the center of the hood, only the stock bumper guards, and mine is red and white instead of yellow and green.

Man! You "kids" will never know was fun it was back then when:
Kids could actually look up to adults with respect because when most of those adults said "I promise to love, honor and respect this person 'til death do us part"...they did for the most part.
I do remember these things I was born in 65.I try and teach it to our kids but seem to get over ruled by the peers. Our kids pay the price when they don't respect their elders but I fear it's a losing battle.

Dwight, thanks for that--could almost see myself in one of those classroom scenes---and it was a great "time" because I truly believed we'd be OK if we did just that!

Sophomore in High school, trying to get my drivers license, listening to Bobby Vinton, Roy Orbison, Connie Francis, Paul Anka etc.... Had no idea about the coming British invasion or mini-skits or hippies or dropping out. We were about to be stunned with the Mustang and those cute little Hondas.

Is it a prime restoration project Ian? It should be!! (Parts may be a little tough though )

No it's just sitting there with 77,000 miles on it with anew clutch and fresh bottom en bearings (maybe 2,000 miles on both) faded paint and interior needs to be redone. My grand parents bought it new in 1955 and parked it in the barn in 64 if memory serves with a bad rod bearing. I did the bottom end in 92 and drove it every day to and from work for a year. Love the car ,it drives very well. Mine is a 2 dr. hard top too. I would either like to sell it or restore it and drive it on weekends for fun. No one wants to make a reasonable offer for it so I never sold it. I kept getting people offering $2,000 give or take. For that I'll keep it. I'm the 2nd owner it only has the 77,000 miles on it so I figure it's gotta be worth something.
Parts are actually pretty easy since much of the parts fit the Hawk models. Newman Altman sells quite a bit for it, even short and long blocks. The breaks are the same un into the 60s and same as the Lark , same goes for the steering parts, engine , and trans.

Yeah, that's what I hear, Gordie!
(either THAT or you ran into Shirley MacLaine somewhere along the line back then while you were out building pyramids for Ramses III!)
being of the Celt/Pict race of people Dwight,i would like to think i had a hand in building them stone circles around Scotland ,Callanish on Lewis ,Brodgar on Orkney also Maes Howe also on the Orkneys ,and maybe a wee working holiday down to Stonhenge , a stoneage Butlins type place, iam sure.Maybe Shirley MacClaine was a Redcoat there HI-DI-HI
Just for a reference Butlins was/is a holiday camp chain that was very popular in the 50s 60s and early 70s in the UK.usually located in old prisoner of war camps , complete with barbed wire and guard towers

BUTLITZ.......
A TRUE funny story that may get scrubbed......
My sister-in-law went to Spain on holiday with a group of friends and one guy was blonde haired blue eyed - the archetypical Arian. They were in a bar and a couple of German girls showed an interest in him. They approached my s-i-l and spoke in German, she said she was English and they asked why she was with a German guy. She told him that he was English but they didn't believe her so she offered to introduce them to him, which she did along with some German guys they were with.
Now a British 'joke' when we meet Germans is that someone always says "Don't mention the war", so when the Germans joined them the blonde guy said it.
After a while with the drinks flowing freely, the blonde guy said "My Grandfather was killed at Colditz". The rest of the group looked at each other and the Germans rather uncomfortably, and one said "was he a prisoner of war? ". "no" said the blonde guy, "he died when he fell out of his machine gun tower". At which point the English group pi$$ed themselves laughing. The Germans didn't get the joke and one of the German guys said in all seriousness " My Grandfather was also a guard at Colditz, maybe he knew your Grandfather" .....
If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

I was pumping gas at my dad's Union station, after school that is, and on weekends. I had a cushman scooter, that I rode around the back roads, no license at that time. That's also about time Wolfman Jack was on the local Pop channel. That was also the end of my Freshman year and beginning of my Sophomore year. Bob

The one I have in my garage is a 1955 Studebaker Champion 2 door hard top.
EDIT: By the way that has to be an early 55 , they changed the windshield mid way through 55.

Great topic Dwight. I was in 8th grade living in St. Louis Missouri and mostly thinking about cool cars, pinball machines, and girls' anatomys. I remember that me and my buddys could immediately identify the exact model and year of any car that we saw go by, even if it was for just for a second. I don't know one car from another now as they all look pretty much the same to me. I most likely would have been found in the bathroom at any given time back in '62. (tmi)

I must have been in Mrs. Polzin's 3rd/4th grade class. Upon completing 3rd grade, you simply moved over a row or two. Mrs. Polzin used to show us her old (new in 62) summer vacation slides, like the old Jackie Vernon skit. I still remember a picture of Mr. Polzin standing in "fat man's misery". Mrs. Polzin found bizzare humor in that . I spelled v-e-g-e-t-a-b-l-e correctly in the spelling bee, but pronounced it as written and everyone laughed. I decided it was better to be funny than smart. Older kids - Eddie Bertram got sent home for wearing his hair in a mohawk, Jim Braun got sent home for wearing a number (33) t shirt, Walker White got sent home for wearing metal heel clips on his harness boots. To mere 3rd graders, such acts of defiance were "godlike". Nehru shirts weren't invented yet, forunately the Leisure Suit wasn't either. jh
