They offered one in that toy pickup they used to get from itsy bitsy. It didn't sell very well. They also had a Perkins diesel in the 1/2 ton in the 60's and it didn't sell well either but, that might have been because it was slower and used almost as much fuel as the inline slant 6. If someone were to overcome the high torque - low RPM nature of the typical road going diesel, you might see one in the Dakota. Until then, they aren't likely to design a heavy duty Dakota frame that can stand up to a diesel because it would cost as much as a Ram. A scaled down engine wouldn't work out because it would not perform as well as the present V6 and, because of the EPA induced high price of fuel, it probably wouldn't even match the economy of the V8. By the way, torque is the reason you can't get a diesel 1500. There is enough room for the engine and gearbox but the frame isn't up to it.
