This post is in response to the previous post by Zmilin about, "How Comfy is a Speedy Seat?"
The problem with the factory seat is, if any of you people out there are built like me then, your a$$ bottoms out on the OEM seats every time you hit a bump or pothole. I suffer from noassatall so I did a bunch of research online and found that a new custom seat was going to cost big money. So, I made my own and, you can too.
With some fiberglass mat and other household tools you can do it. Building your own custom seat is much easier than you might think.
There is a company up in North Carolina called Dynamic Systems, Inc. They are the manufactures of Sunmate and Pudgee foam products. This is orthopedic foam used in the medical industry as well as the space program. This foam is available in all different types. Hard, soft, medium or even dual laminated; like hard and soft laminated together. This stuff is real expensive but, they sell seconds for cheap. Don't make the same mistake I made when ordering and get only two layers. If you do and you are making a low profile seat the contours will not allow the thicker two layers of foam to conform to your seat pan very well. It would be better to order three or even four or five layers depending on how soft or firm of a ride you want. This company is very helpful in assistance for choosing the right product. If you tell them your height and weight, and something of your build you can get foam that will allow you to ride comfortably all day long. Dynamic Systems phone number is (828) 683-3523 and the website is
www.sunmatesushions.com.The seat pan is self explanatory. Go here:
www.bikernet.com/garage/coxseat.asp and browse through all the seat modifications done by folks here. Also, go here:
www.diymotorcycleseat.com and here:
www.jeffreyphipps.com/seat_pans.htm. All this stuff is pretty straight forward and if you want to really do something cool to the leather of your seat go here for ideas:
www.badassseats.com. I opted to make a low profile seat with an English "Coat of Arms" design that really makes the bike "POP". I have been using it every time I ride. It is so comfortable I would never go back to the OEM.
The leather is available at any Tandy leather outfit as are all the tools you may need for embellishing your design.
All told I think I have less than $200.00 in my seat. It took about a week of spare time to make it. As soon as I have more time I will come back and post some pics for you to see my seat. You’ll love it.
