Hey folks, As always, I will plead uneducated new guy but it's not like this is rocket science or anything. I change my oil Saturday and oooh...look, drips off the filter. So, I wipe them up and wait...couple drips off the filter. I wipe it off, wait, no drips. Start the bike, no drips. Let it run a few minutes, no drips. Take it out for a test run and, (not that I notice until five minutes later)apparently shifting into second, about 100 ft. from my drive, pow. Oil everywhere. I should take a pic of the street. So, figuring I cranked it too tight ( I used the canister wrench), I redo the entire thing all over again, filter and all. This time I go with hand tight. Then I put rubber gloves on for grip, and give it one more small snug. I start the bike, oil blows out the filter gasket. I wipe it off, no leaks. I let it run for a few, no leaks. I rev it, pow...three quarts on my driveway in a foamy puddle. Cool. So I'm figuring I call everyone I know, including Ma's Cycles and three mechanics, one of which rides our bike...general consensus so far? Crappy filters. Since everyone I asked said the same thing, I'm inclined to go with that but any other experiences or insight on these filters that anyone would like to share? Personally, I think NAPA ought to refund my cost on everything. They offerred to give me my loot back on the filter. But if it's their filter that caused it, I figure they should be up for the full tab. Anyhow...Any other thoughts, opinions or insights? I'm open... BB

Tad, I know this is pretty obvious, but did you check that the old filter gasket didn't remain on the engine? Double gasket causes this every time.

What Bill said.... I don't have any experience with NAPA filters on any of my vehicles. I only use good filters...

Bill, Thanks for the gentle reminder. No offense taken, everyone I asked said the same thing. I'm 100% positive that wasn't it. I checked both times as I wiped down the surface where the filter seats and, the rings are still on all three filters. But, the obvious does escape me from time to time...I appreciate your help. BB

Don, Your brief and focused comment speaks volumes. Ma's Cycles recommends K&N 191. I've used Pureone 14612 with no problems. I'm on the case today...Thanks. Shame we didn't see you at Pat's. Tad

Tad: That is the wrong NAPA Gold Filter. I use: FIL1358 I mistakenly asked for a wrong number the first time using NAPA and had the same result as you. Once I discovered my mistake and installed the 1358, no furthur problems. I'm on my 3rd NAPA Gold. I tried to find the PureOne, but none available at my PepBoys (lousy store in my area). The NAPA Gold is available pretty much anywhere here. They were white, but are now painted black so it blends in much nicer.

Al,
Thanks for getting back to me. I was wondering if that was the problem. I remembered a post about the filters from some time agon and whoever posted the equivalents listed NAPA Gold 1358/1365. I thought I remember the 58 being too long someone said and it hung down below the frame making it difficult to put on a lift. NAPA said the 65 was the swap out for the PUREONE model.
In any event, I'm going to talk them and see if I can settle for a refund of just the oil products and go with the K&N filter Ma's recommended.

Napa filters are made by Wix. Wix is actually a very good filter. Highly regarded in the heavy duty truck industry.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger......and then it hit me.

We use Wix on everything in our fleet, from pickups to earthmoving equipment. Never seen one fail.

The NAPA Gold filter and Wix filters have always shown good filtering results in any of the filter analysis sites that I have seen.

Absolutely. The Carquest house brand filter is also a Wix. Another excellent filter is Baldwin, although I haven't cross referenced a cycle filter to them yet (just my cars).

We use NAPA filters at work when we can't find O.E. and have not had any problems... for our big truck applications we pretty much stick to Fleetguard. I'm sure NAPA and Wix and the other reputable brands are good filters, I just always use origional equipment filters. period... My Chevys get AC Delco and my bike gets a Triumph filter, if I had a Ford it would get a Motocraft. Just my personal preference... and opinion.

Funny this comes up, the same thing just happened to me last week. I changed my oil and filter with AMSOIL and there filter SMF103-C on saturday morning and rode about 70 miles over about 4 or 5 days, well thursday morning on my way to work i stop at a light and POW and i hear this hissing noise, well i thought it was a flat tire, i take off around the corner to find somewhere to pull over next thing i know i am all over the road the back tire was doused in oil. I probably rode 200 yards and all my oil was on the street. Thank the (big guy) it waited to blow because i had just got off the highway and was moving along at a good clip, anyway what seems to have happened is some filters the center where it screws on is to high and it bottoms out on the nipple it has a nut on it, i guess it can be removed if need be, but the filters with this problem seem to hit the nut and stops the filter from tightening correctly i thought maybe i was the only one this had happened to i guess not. anyway look at the filter you took off if its all scuffed around the hole it hit bottom. the filters should not hit the nut on the nipple if its the right filter. I will only use Fram PH6017A from now on the center of these filters are much deeper and will never bottom out it will pull the nipple out of the engine first. this is something worth keeping an eye on it can be a very dangerous situation if this happens when your cruising MAN this could get very messy (no joke) the back end of my bike was covered with oil, anyway lets keep an eye on these filters guys

Duane,do your motorcycle a big favor and DO NOT put a FRAM oil filter on it.Every filter test rates the FRAM as substandard.See for yourself.Web search "oil filter tests" Also thanks for the heads up on the clearence issue.I will take a look at all of my filters. I keep all of my old filters, numbered as to when they were replaced.Someday I will cut em open and see what I can see. Al

Duane, Thjat's the differnce between the two I had. 1365 crowns up and the 1358 crowns down. There is also a differnce in how the entire inner part of the can is made. that made the difference; the 1365's just couldn't seat. When I went back to NAPA, the crabby lady looked in the book and said, "well this says it's the right filter". I'm gearing for an argument and the manager comes over and points out that two of them DID blow and said, "did you check in the computer, books are wrong sometimes". The computer said 1358. They gave me a four quarts of oil, a new filter and a quart of Lucas Oil Treament. It works fine now. Everyone, thanks for the help. BB

Agreed with that one, a Fram is probably the worst filter you could chose (well maybe the STP or no-name from Walmart)

AC Delco, Motorcraft, MOPAR, and pretty much all OEM filters are made by contractors. Mostly Hastings, Champion, and Fram. None of which I would use. The vehicle manufacturers do not make thier own filters.

Yes I'm aware of that, auto parts is what I do for a living. O.E. parts are built to the manufacturers specs.... not Wix, NAPA's, Auto Zones or Walmarts. Do I truly believe that? yes I do.

any suggestions on a good quality filter that crowns down for good clearance part numbers so on. I know fram filters suck but i do not know of any other brands that fit. I really do not want to go through another blown filter episode that gave me a rush on many different levels let me tell you
