...and I can't remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride, but something touched me deep inside,
The day the music died.

OOH! I always liked that group, Geoff. Remember, "Thirty Days In The Hole" and my favorite, "Stone Cold Fever"? Talk 'bout your GUI-tar riffs, huh?! I think I can safely say that THIS is about as close to ANY humble pie as I'll be likely to be gettin' within the next 24 hours, kid!

Just think, Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the plane so a very sick Richie Valens could go ahead and get some rest. Richie probably wasn't counting on such a long nap and Waylon surely wasn't thinking about joining a new band.

Do I detect another true rock 'n' roll fan ??
Although the early Elvis stuff was good I feel he overshadowed a lot of great talent that never achieved the recognition they may have got if Elvis hadn't been the 'media favourite'.
Artistes such as Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly, I could list dozens that in my opinion were as good as Elvis what they did but were left in the shadows because of the bandwagon that surrounded Elvis.
Should I duck and dive for cover ????

I agree, Steve, but those others you mentioned didn't have a certain Colonel pushing their careers along. I think that was probably the diference here.

That's okay, just have them download any of the hundreds of covers of "Not Fade Away"...The Rolling Stones, Rush, Sheryl Crow, Deep Purple...and they'll get it.

We were just honored by the appearence of Peggy Sue Gerron the real "Peggy Sue" here in Waterloo. She was in the area after spending the day at the Surf Ballroom hawking her new book "What ever happened to Peggy Sue?" Shes 67 now and is writing from her diaries some 50 years after the song. They have quite an event every year in Clear Lake, home to the Surf. ModelMaker

American Pie is a rock song by singer-songwriter Don McLean.
Recorded and released on the American Pie album in 1971, the single was a number-one U.S. hit for four weeks in 1972. The song is an abstract story of his life that starts with the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) in a plane crash in 1959, and ends in 1970. The importance of "American Pie" to America's musical and cultural heritage was recognized by the Songs of the Century education project which listed the song performed by Don McLean as the number five song of the twentieth century.
The song's lyrics are the subject of much curiosity. Although McLean dedicated the American Pie album to Buddy Holly, none of the singers in the plane crash are identified by name in the song itself. When asked what "American Pie" meant, McLean replied, "It means I never have to work again."[1] Later, he more seriously stated "You will find many 'interpretations' of my lyrics but none of them by me... sorry to leave you all on your own like this but long ago I realized that songwriters should make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence."[2
