In Costco last weekend.
They had a Widmer Brothers sampler case, four different brews. I'm rather partial to the Broken Halo IPA, though the Drop Top Amber Ale is nice.

Well actually I like a darker ale, Bill. And after last year's SWTF, Becky has me really into that Fat Tire stuff now.

(yumm!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Fat tire's good too.
I predict that we'll be sampling quite a variety this year.

Hey!!! We're not getting off the subject here, beer and old AM radio were made for each other

(psst Dwight, that was meant for the snivlers, not you)

Okay...ANYONE! One final Golden Oldie, for tonight, that you seldomly hear anywhere on the radio anymore?!

Any genre, from the years, say, 1955(the year Rock and Roll first hit) to 1970?

(AND...one final note for tonight....)

I know that was a pretty poor video transfer there, Bill, and so I can't tell for sure...but it appears that there was a WHOLE LOT o' white kids in that there audience with absolutely NO SENSE OF RHYTHM!!!

(...which, come to think of it, I guess isn't all that shocking, huh?!)

<<HEY! Here's another musical genre that hasn't been mentioned yet that was played quite a bit back then on those old radios that took a little while to warm up....The Instrumental!>>

A lot here has drifted from the 'obscure' heading but what the hay! I'm a music junkie, and a real instro junkie, so i can't resist.

Blues Theme - Davie Allan & the Arrows
Baby Elephant Walk - Lawrence Welk
No Matter What Shape (your stomach's in)- The T-Bones (and an Alka Seltzer commercial you might remember)
Soul Finger - The Bar-Kays
The Horse - Cliff Nobles & Co.
Telstar - Tornadoes
Tequila - The Champs
Memphis - Lonnie Mack
Raunchy - Bill Justis
Groovy Grubworm - Harlow Wilcox & The Oakies (guess where he's from?!)

Lots of TV & Movie Themes, don't know which made radio:
Peter Gunne Theme - Henry Mancini (he could make a long list)
Hawaii 5-0 - the Ventures (who had a myriad of singles, such as "Walk, Don't Run", "Diamond Head", "Perfidia" etc)
Good Bad & Ugly - Ennio Morricone (long list of his stuff could be made)
And all the 60s TV Shows had great themes (Green Acres, Munsters, Addams Family, etc etc.

Surf stuff:
Out of Limits - Marketts (couldn't use 'Outer Limits' legally)
Pipeline - The Chantays
Wipeout - (already mentioned, except the band, The Surfaris)
Mr. Moto - The Bel Airs
Baja - The Astronauts
Penetration - The Pyramids
Let's Go Trippin' -- Misirlou - Dick Dale & the Del-Tones
Rumble - Link Wray
Apache - (besides Shadows/Ventures, Jorgen Ingmann from '61)
Bustin' Surfboards - The Tornadoes
Churchkey - The Rivieras (had to plug my namesake!) from the guys who did California Sun
It's A Gas! -- Alfred E. Newman -(probably not on the radio but every kid who had that cardboard record from Mad Magazine (and i still have it) spread the word..or, er, gas.)

Some others that are vocals not heard a lot:
Skinny Legs and All - Joe Tex (as well as the great "Show Me")
Surfin' Bird - The Trashmen (My Fave. Mind numbingly brilliant!)

Now THOSE are some great memories there, CJ!!!

(BTW..my cellphone ringtone was the Peter Gunn theme for a while)

And here's a few more TV theme songs which I remember were hits on the AM pop radio during that era....

The Monkees Theme("Hey, hey...we're the Monkees")
Mission: Impossible(Lalo Schifrin)
Long Lonesome Highway(Then Came Bronson Theme/Michael Parks)

Thnx, Dwight!
Ah, memories! TV themes were really great back in the day weren't they.
Oh, i wanted to mention a great instro by a country band:
"Buckaroo" by Buck Owens & the Buckaroos (featuring the great Don Rich on guitar).
btw: there are tons of great surf instro groups out today, and plenty of great chicken pickers too. Glad to see the tradition is alive and well.
Cheers!

Little known fact. Buddy Owens (son of Buck) was actually the first successfull example of genetic cloning.

REALLY, John?!

Well, I don't know if you know THIS, but MY parents actually were the first to raise a child born of genetic CLOWNING!!!

Seems the story goes that somehow the DNA of Larry Harmon got intermingled in that petri dish!

(...or was that Emmett Kelly???)

It "is" kinda scary idn't it?
Although, i'm not sure why anyone would purposely want to look like Buck!

So, to keep it on the obscure; What we're gonna do right here is go back,
Way back into time,
When the only people that existed were Troglodytes.

Troglodytes... that's a slightly painful memory there.

I DJ'd an extended family anniversary party several years ago - playing mostly oldies and the required wedding dance songs, etc... One of the songs I played with a big smile on my face (and several brews in my belly) was "The Bertha Butt Boogie"... it went over well with the crowd except for one person. My mother-in-law. Yep... Bertha.

Seems she didn't like being called Bertha Butt for the next several months - and she blamed me for that! Sock it to me took on a whole new meaning...
