Did a school play based on "Monster Mash" which reminds me...what about the Gene Simmons ( not of Kiss) song "don't be here when the morning comes" ? I think that was the title,,,have lost the 45 but was about a ghost telling a fella to - get out !
Daniel: that was "Haunted House" by Jumpin' Gene Simmons. The lyrics are here: http://rockmaven.com/haunted%20house.htm

<<Johnny Horton had the AM in the early 60s.>>
I would sing Battle of New Orleans over and over back when i first heard it. Later, i discovered his rockin'/hillbilly stuff that is really good. ie: Honky Tonk Man, Honky Tonk Hardwood Floors, One Woman Man.

I believe Please Pass the Biscuits (as well as Big Bad John), was by Jimmy Dean. http://www.lyricsdownload.com/jimmy-dean-please-pass-the-biscuits-lyrics.html
Frost was a great Detroit band. Wagner went on to play with a lot of big names.

I remember listening to a VERY young Tanya Tucker sing "Delta Dawn" on the my first "transistor" AM radio. Remember when we still called them that?

My first radio was a crystal radio that I built. I have no idea what I heard on it - that was way too many burnt brain cells ago...

Not obscure, but all of Fats Domino's hits were first heard on AM radio. Also Tenn. Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons"
if life gives you lemons keep them because hey, free lemons.

"Sixteen Tons"???...and whaddaya GET???
(sorry)
That reminds me...there were a lot of crossover "Country and Western"(the old term) hits that made it over to the AM Pop radio stations back then. Isn't it a shame that like most everything nowdays, most things are so broken down into niches that seldomly ever "crossover" into other realms anymore. Don't forget, the old AM "Rock Stations" used to also play Doo-wop and Motown also, which I also loved listening to back in the day!

There are "certain" song references that if subliminally placed into the collective subconcience can/may result in the loss of ba.com membership privileges. I will now retire to the moderator lounge for consultation purposes to see if THAT is one of them.
Good Luck

I have a nice version of Apache by the Ventures on an old LP. I won't even try loading that youtube version on my dialup.

Good Point, Bill! And in fact, right after I entered my instrumental prompts there, I found, watched and listened to THAT exact YouTube entry, with the Ventures there in Japan in 1966 doing "Pipeline"!
(great minds...huh?!)
And I can't remember, but has anybody yet mentioned The Beach Boys here! Talk 'bout having that old AM transistor radio pressed up to your ear, and listenin' to "Surfin' U.S.A", "Little Duece Coupe", "Help Me Rhonda", "Fun, Fun, Fun", "California Girls", "Good Vibrations", and many many more...huh?!
Those dudes were the biggest thing goin' right before The Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan, ya know.

Speaking of Mr. McQueen... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm3kqis8YGs(for some reason after that one, I'm a hankerin' for a Marlboro cigarette right now!) and another one of my all time favorite western movie themes... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6vREiRNMFc

Well, I went looking for the theme from "The Guns of Navarone" (stayin' in Greece ), but couldn't find a decent version. Did find this though: High Noon . Written by the same guy, Dimitri Tiomkin, sung by Tex Ritter. Used to hear it on the (AM)radio in my parents car when just a tyke. And staying with Greece: web page The music doesn't start for a minute, but looking at Melina Mercouri makes up for it

Funny the things you find out. While searching for the Guns of Navarone theme, I found that one of the British commandos was played by Peter Grant, who went on to manage Led Zeppelin.
