Well, after nearly 4 years K&N has finally made a drop in replacement air filter for the stock paper filter. 'Bout time!!!

Yep, Greg found this out and mentioned it in another post.

I'm glad to see you are carrying them, I feel another order coming on soon...

When Greg posted, I went to the K&N site and found that they make a drop-in air filter for my truck also. I knew they made the sewer pipe performance set up filter for my truck, but I wasn't willing to spend that kind of money.

Anyway, I bought the drop-in filter last weekend and installed it. The truck seems to run a little better. The best part is the gas guage seems to be slower to drop towards "E".... I'll be checking my mileage soon and if it has improved, then buying one of these for the bike will be a no-brainer.
It's not much more than the stock filter and should last nearly forever if maintained correctly.

Hey Brent

Your timing couldn't be better - just got my bike back from it's 30 000km service with the news that my filter needs replacing. Just wondering, if the filter increases airflow am I going to need bigger jets to stop it leaning out the mixture? I've currently got (I believe, dealer fitted them) 130 jets and the pipes have had two of the baffles enlarged. Was also wondering if you knew how the price of the K&N compares to the OEM one?

While I'm bugging you with questions, you don't sell chains for our bikes too do you? Couldn't see them on your site and if I'm going to get the filter sent over I might as well do the chain too, since it's nearing the end of it's usefull life as well.

If you are considering filtration other than OEM paper, please first read some test results.

Nothing really. Just don't ride throught Iraq during one of their sand storms. The freak kit eliminates the restrictive Stock air induction system and the K&N air filters are part of the kit. From my experience the K&N only looks cool but doesn't really add performance on its own.

The worst kind of dirt for a motor is the dirt performance filters don't catch. It acts like sandpaper on the rings. Myself? I'd rather sacrifice a small amount of performance (which can be made up elsewhere) instead of smoking my motor. I'm sure the manufacturers have durability in mind rather than performance when they deisgn things like the air filter. There is a reason for this. "Pay me now - or pay me later." Sound familiar?

On first glance, the tests look like anything other than paper filters will damage your engine. However, the test is also pouring dust and dirt more or less DIRECTLY into the filters. I don't know anyone who rides in dust storms and that's what you would have to do in order to get the magnitude of dirt that they report.

Also on first glance, it appears that the K&N, Amsoil, and UNI are the worst because they pass more dust. Well duh, they are open filters and that is exactly why I run an open filter. I want MORE air, not less.

One thing I do not see in there is an efficiency curve over time. Paper filters get less efficient and the 'bad' three get more efficient as far as dust goes.

Bottom line, I am going to run a filter that allows gobs of air and that is the K&N for me. Everyone else can run whatever they are comfortable with.

btw, I have been running these filters for years and I have yet to see any damage. I ran an 84 Jeep CJ7 for 12 years and put almost 200,000 on it. A K&N in it from day one and it ran just as good on the day I sold it as the day I bought it. Same thing with a 95 Ford F150 with 140,000 miles.

OK, the recent air filter discussion, and my sudden need for a new one's led me to do some looking-around for alternatives. I rang my dealer for a price on the OEM one and they also offered me a "high performance", reusable filter by DNA. Anyone heard of these beasts? Interestingly they have different filter part numbers for a Triumph America and a Triumph Bonneville America. Have emailed them asking for a "please explain" and will let you all know what (if anything) they say about it.

Hi Yota,
I had a 1980 F100 that had 287,000 miles on it when the rear seal went out - Never Again will I own another Ford.
That was the only thing wrong with it in 11 years, other than the 5speed overdrive trashed at 105,000 miles. Replaced it with one from a junk yard, that didn't have "hencho de mexico" and a black crow stamped on it. Ran great after that, until that rear seal started leaking.
Never again! I got a GMC now - somewhere in the back yard. Guess I'll bush-hog this afternoon to see if it's still there.

Dennis
p.s. Just kidding, i do drive my truck several times a week.

Hi matt,
My dealer up here on the coast quoted me $94 for the oem filter, just wondering what they are worth down there in Brizzy.

p.s. I've done 33000km and my chain is still in good nick

Hey Phil..

Yeah I reckon my chain's still ok, prolly a bit more than half way thru the adjusters. The mechanic (who in general I trust) at Bris Triumph reckon'd it was near the end of it, that I'd probably get another 5000km out of it, but that the cogs'd prolly be chewed up by then. I can get an EK 525MVXZ chain (the heavy duty job, in pretty gold yet) for AU$150 so I'm thinking I'll do it in the next couple of months.

Same dealer quoted me AU$102 for the OEM filter and AU$125 for a DNA one which's apparently reusable (same as the K&N). Gotta see if there's a local K&N or DNA dealer that'll give me a better price. If not, Brent'll be getting another order from me.

I was getting pits from rocks on the hood nose and above the windshield in the chrome trim and the paint above that (bug splatters too).

I installed the deflector and never had another issue. They deflect the wind enough to throw the crap up and over...

well stopped at the dealer on the way home from work today and they know nothing of the k&n filter ,he even made a phone call while i was there to someone who deals in k&n and they knew nothing, he is getting back to me about the DNA filter and price.

Oh and Sandman have you checked out how much it would be to get one from brent, including postage and all the other unforseen taxes we pay?

I'm guessing with postage it'd be about AU$100 which makes it a comparable price to the OEM ones. I'm hoping brent gets back to my earlier message about chains before I start getting firm prices - figure if I'm getting one thing I'll get both at once if possible. Customs have never gotten me for duty etc, and (touch wood) I hope they never will.

Ohhh.... Yeah, we have chains. We stock the DID X-Ring chain;

Shipping internationally wouldn't be cheap, though because of the weight.

Ahh that explains why I couldn't see it, it was on the bonneville page. Looks like it'll just be the filter then, will be in touch thru your site when I decide if I want anything else to go with it. (Who am I kidding, I gotta decide where I'm getting the money from, I -know- there's other stuff I want! )
