I dropped off my spare tank today to have it smoothed over. Basically the badge holes get filled, fuel filler, guage indent and console mounting tabs are being removed and replaced by sheetmetal. A new fuel filler bung will be welded in an inch or so further forward (still centered) and a flush mount pop up gas cap will be installed. The guy doing the work suggested I go take a look at the HD version as I had concerns with the pop up damaging paint on the edge (I saw a bike that only had one tank of fuel in it and it was already chipped). I gotta say...the HD part was enginered very well, was easy to pop up and out and had a nice flush collar. It looked way better than the screw in one too (they had one of those on a nice bike but it didnt sit flush. Ill post pics in a few weeks when I get the tank back. It wont be pretty cause itll still need to go to a body shop for final smoothing and prep before paint. Im leaving the seam...I have convinved myself that I kinda like it and feel it adds a bit of over to the underside. On top of that it drives the price wayyyyy up  Well see what happens...maybe it it looks goofey Ill have it removed. The guy doing the work used to own a Triumph...LOL...and seemed kinda exited to be doing something other than a Harley. Go figure!

Got the tank back today. Im happy with the work thats been done on it. I ordered the new gas cap as well. That should arrive next week some time. Next step is coating the inside then a body shop for some final touches and what I think may just be primer for now. Still tossing around the idea of which hard bags to go with. Seems to make sense that any painting that gets done should be done all at the same time. I do have to say...for as happy as I am with this I just dont feel that feeling of accomplishment that Im sure Runner0023 is feeling right now. And...I beleive his welding looks better. Anyway...here are the pics...  LOL...you cant see it but the new bung has a small Harley logo engraved on it...LOL

Thats great work, I see why your happy with it! Looks like your fuel bung might be a little further forward than mine. I bet you can't wait to get it painted just like me!  Have you decided what shape fuel cap you will use yet?

Runner...Im going for teh flush look with a pop up gas cap. After looking at a few options I am going with the H-D Chrome Flush-Mount Fuel Cap. Its a far better fit and finish than some of the others I was looking at.

Yer, that should look real good. I considered those when choosing my new cap. Can't wait to see it, your's will probably be finished before mine!

I ran into a slight issue with the HD gas cap. The cap is fine but the trim ring is not going to fit quite right. I think I might have to scrap the HD cap and go with a screw in (I already ordered one on Ebay).
Ill post pics of the issue later today when I get home.

Hope you ordered a vented one. Remember, vented is always right hand thread high side tank. Non-vented is always left hand thread low side tank. Also, I wonder what kind of mounting problems you ran into? I'm awaiting the arrival of my black, vented, pop-up, screw-in, gas cap and weld in bung(breath)from J.P. cycles. Hopefully I can make that sweet baby work; I became a bit aroused when first I laid eyes on her.

ok....I am keeping the HD cap...it just looks better. Its going to mean a bit more massaging of the tank but hey...they dotn call it a project for nothing right. I got the inside coated to prevent rusting and am going to take it to the body guy in a few weeks so he can adjust as needed and get it primered. Here are a few pics... Cap up  Cap down  Top view  Side view with trim ring...you can see what needs to be adjusted. That trim ring is supposed to be flush all around the cap.

You expect it to be flush without any filler? Did you pay for that kind of quality metalwork or just a simple patch job? How much DID you pay?

Honestly I dont remeber what I paid but I think it was too much.
The body guy I talked to said he was going to massage it a bit and probably only have to use a small amount of filler.
Like I said...its all on hold for now untill it gets cold and wet again. Then Ill either continue or scrap it all.

Don't scrap it. Someone will take up the yoke, so to speak. I was thinking I would take it but you already drilled for the new filler. I want to offset mine.

My tank is done and on my bike. Just tried taking pix but the garage lights were glaring too much of the shiny black. I'll try to post some photos tomorrow.

It looks great without any added paint!... but if it were me I would be too tempted to have a Punisher skull painted on the top of the tank as the overall shape lends itself to it.
