I've had 4 El Caminos over the years, from '76 to '82.. last one got trashed in Hurricane Andrew. Wish GM would bring 'em back, they were great little performers.. I kept a '79 going for years with junk yard 350's.. blow one up, buy another for $300 and slap it in, and you are good for at least another year. Towards the end of it's life, I could do a complete engine swap in under 45 minutes, from the time I parked it to the time I drove it back out Cheers, Brad

Yep Brad, I agree! Here's my submission for the "Eighth Wonder Of The Modern World".... The Chevy small-block!!!
And my favorite Caminos are(as you probaly can surmise), the '69s and '70s.
AND, you're right AGAIN! What's with GM blowin' money on that little pseudo-Hot Rod Chevy SSR a few years ago, and NOT spendin' it on makin' a NEW friggin' EL CAMINO???!!! HUH G.M.???
(it's no wonder them boy in Detroit are losin' money hand over fist lately, huh?!)

Wish I still had mine, it was great little all around vehicle; dumbest car trade I ever made was letting that one get away.

If they ever do bring it back, I hope they do a better job than Subaru did on the Brat. I like the concept of the Brat, but the execution left something to be desired, IMO. They did good jobs on the Outback and the Legacy, but seem to have missed the boat on the Brat. Well, who knows, GM finally seems to have hit the mark with the new Malibu, mabye, just maybe...

Slightly OT: There is an ongoing series over on Jalopnik.com where people send in examples of other vehicles that have been "el camino-ized." They're also tracking rumors of a new el camino coming to market which is basically a rebadged Aussie Ute. http://jalopnik.com/tag/el-camino/

A friend of mine had a brat. Not long after he got it, his wife bumped the curb (kerb) whilst parking and did half the price of the "car" worth of damage to the front suspension. Rates a 0.2 for offroad abilities.

I had a Ranchero for about 6 months when the body collapsed from rust! I was driving on the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway on Long Island when the back just fell down- blew out both rear tires and made a few sparks!

The newer Subaru Bajas are probably closest to being a Camino, Greg.(maybe) But, seeing as how a body-on-frame automobile is becoming pretty rare nowdays, as the GM A-bodies were, I doubt GM would go this route again.
But even if they did bring out a new El Camino, I doubt with these young pup car stylists today infatuated with the boxy squared-off "industrial look" they seem to be, that any new El Camino you might see at your local Chevy dealer would look NEARLY as good as these older beautifully contoured ones were!

Hi Dwight. I had a '72. Rear window leaked like a mofo and I sold it when the front end couldn't take any more shims to keep it tracking straight. I wish I had it back. But then i wish I had my discards back: 1969 Roadrunner, 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, and a 1970 Plymouth Cuda. Oh..and my vote for the eight wonder of the engine world was introduced in 1964. The famed 426 Hemi. Here are some hemi fun facts for us motorheads out there:
The Elephant (aka, the HEMI(R). Arena... TOP FUEL DRAGSTERs
One TF dragster's 500-inch Hemi makes more horsepower than the first 8 Rows at the Daytona 500.
Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1 1/2 gallons of nitro per second, the same rate of fuel consumption as a fully loaded 747 but with 4 times the energy volume.
A stock hemi will not produce enough power to drive the dragster's supercharger.
Even with nearly 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into nearly-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock.
Dual magnetos apply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.
At stoichiometric (exact) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture (for nitro), the flame front of nitromethane measures 7050 degrees F.
Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.
Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After ½ way, The engine is dieseling from compression - plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.
If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in those cylinders and then explodes with a force that can blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.
To exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4G's. But in reaching 200 mph well before 1/2 track, launch acceleration is closer to 8G's.
If all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs $1000.00 per second.
Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence.
Top Fuel Engines turn ONLY 540 revolutions from light to light!
The redline is actually quite high at 9500rpm
Putting it all in perspective:
You are driving an average Lingenfelter powered "twin-turbo" Corvette. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start, but you still run the 'Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and past the dragster at an honest 200 mph. At this moment, the dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot hard down, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within seconds the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you passed him.
This phenomenal machine has spotted you 200mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1320 feet. Chrysler first designed and built the HEMI for the street in 1951.

yeah thats not too bad at all...the front sides look low and squatty like a bmw m3 or something. I think if anyones gonna make it, it'd be pontiac...they seem to be trying with the GTO and such. Not that it really resembles the old ones, but they wanna sell the name so i guess we gotta deal with it. It better be a hybrid too, just to pis people off...ahha

You're sure right, Doug. Hemi's sure could be one of those "Wonders" too. But I'd put it 9th. And the reason is that the Chevy Small-Block has basically become that "trusted workhorse" of an entire automotive industry, whereas the Hemi is more a "specialty engine". (BTW folks....Doug here has some very nice vehicles, both two and four wheeled, and we ran into each other going down a main boulevard around here just the other week...me in the Spyder and him in his Dodge Hemi Magnum...no, not THAT kind of "running into" thank gawd, or you wouldn't be reading THIS right now!!!)

The Ridgeline is exactly what I meant earlier when I mentioned that the car designers today seem infatuated with that "industrial look". It's BOXY!!! And that's okay for a friggin' truck(as my Silverado proves daily), but NOT for a "Specialty Vehicle" such as an El Camino which was, at least in my estimation, the perfect compromise(not a bad word, folks) between what a car should have(flowing lines) and a truck, which in the El Caminos case could be used as such. WHAT a VEHICLE, huh?!
(in other words....I CAN'T STAND BOXY CARS, even if they can be used to pickup that new water heater at your local Home Deport OR to throw a couple of motorcycles into the back of!)

Yep, mine was basically half a Monte Carlo/Malibu with pickup bed and cool hideaway behind the driver's seat. I'll give Honda kudos for building a solid vehicle but I want style to go with it. Same with the Avalanche, solid dependable and bulky. Dwight, I want Hoy-Chee-Mama Hot Rod style! Not bulbous sensible shoes on wheels...

Not Camino, but Ranchero.
New Year's Eve, 1970. Seventeen year olds Jimmy Korth & myself stayed at a brother-in-law's cabin outside of Tigerton. There was an early 60's ranchero at our disposal. Being mature for our age and New Year's eve at that, we first went to the local bowling alley and bought a package of Swisher Sweet cigars. Then beebopped down the frozen two lane to Mark's Beer Shack in Elderon, where if you were old enough to crawl up on the stool, you were probably old enough to drink a Hamm's shorty. Sometime between the first shorty and the next morning, the cocktail of beer, cigars and spinning ranchero-induced brodies on the icy deserted country roads resulted in bad juju.
Caminos/ranchero car/trucks have always reminded me of that fatefull night.

And BTW Bill, I don't care what you call it. There's one thing for certain here...THAT baby just SITTIN' THERE looks a million times faster than your garden variety SNAIL!!! (get it?!...a snail is a hermaphorditic organism.....yeah, I know...that was pretty lame, wasn't it)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

The Holden will come to the USA as a Pontiac.
