It doesn't seem that anyone here has had reliability concerns or mileage woes with carbs and with EFI still an unknown quantity it's hard to offer advice. You will save as much on a wise purchase of a used America or Speedmaster than you'll save in mileage improvements for many years so it's really up to you.
