So many, so many....besides early Zep, Cream, Stones, & Beatles:
The Who! Also, Humble Pie, the Yardbirds, anything Jeff Beck, The Small Faces, Dave Clark 5, The Pretty Things (way under appreciated), Pink Floyd (but mainly with Syd Barrett), Free, The Creation, early Mayall, early King Crimson, Dr. Feelgood, The Inmates, The Shadows, early Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green), Incredible String Band, Pink Fairies, Procol Harum, Twink, July, Apple...Kinks & Animals, too. Dusty Springfield, not a group, but still...
Spooky Tooth's "Spooky Two" album was brilliant as well as their version of I Am the Walrus. Taste (Rory Gallagher) and Them, but they'd be Irish.

They were all great, depending on your attitude at the time. I don't think I saw Uriah Heep or Black Sabbath or 10cc or Herman's Hermits or Jethro Tull mentioned yet...

The Beatles are WAY overrated. Essentially the n'sync of there time with some good marketing. There early stuff was pretty much pop crap. Fortunately they all grew out of that and did put together some good music. As musical talent goes good but not great IMHO. Versatility does not necessarily mean good. Like I said, they did go on to put some good music together, unfortunately that part of their careers didn't last long enough.
Without a doubt my favorite Brit band is The Who
Lots of other music out there, almost too many to name. Thank goodness all those little isles over there generated a great group of musically talented people. Next week I am going to see the Wolfe Tones at Gaelic park here in Chi'town. I know, Irish, but I was adressing all those islands over there.
Best album - Quadrophenia. Unfortunately I seemed to identify more with the main mod character there but have always been into the motorcycle side of things. Different culture different time I guess.
Ride On!

You'd be hard pressed to find a single modern recording that didn't learn from Rubber Soul and Revolver. Just as Les Paul revolutionized recording with multiple tracks, George Martin and The Beatles pretty much defined the art of overdubbing and mastering. Hard to overate that. As far as pop "crap"...there's never been another act with 5 singles in the top ten, ever. That, my friend, is pop history.

As names like Blind Faith, Yard Birds, and Cream and countless other successful British bands and performers came drifting by in my occasionally lucid mind, I began to realize that there was an underlying connection to these as well as just about every Brit band that achieved any real and lasting success or notoriety. I then recognized the same similarity holds true for American bands. I then rationalized that perhaps there are no great Brit or great American rock groups, and that there is only one true music greatness. That one true and undeniable greatness – that solitary link, that connecting thread, perhaps the DNA of rock music - The genetic link that connects rock music -Brit or American - to all other music life forms, past, present and future is none other than Eric Clapton.

Can't argue with that. Once in an interview he made some humble comment about lifting his work from BB, Freddie & Albert King and T-Bone Walker. And yet he remains the premier soloist of his time. BTW, I have an "EC is God" tee given to me by the way under appreciated Ray Kennedy (such are the perks of guitar roadies, free tees).

I thought the original question was "Best Brit Group" (other than Beatles/Stones). I think almost every group from GB has been named. I think this is getting a bit thread worn.

I completely agree. Thus, has the Mother Country produced the best music over the last 4 decades?

I was surprised to see Uriah Heep listed. Not a hugely successful band, but one I used to like when I was a dumb, young man. They have a piece on you tube, still rocking in Brazil on tour. They did, "The Wizard" which is largely unknown outside their own fans but still one of my top ten beautiful songs. I love the acoustic guitar and melody, then the hard drivin rock finish.

Good point Barry, but if you're going to delve into the DNA of rock music here, and especially with regard to the great Mr.Clapton, I'd say HIS DNA musical roots are much more american than british.
As I recall, the Mississippi Delta is in the Good Ol' U.S.of A., and not in Ol' Blighty.

Just to add to the wear: I neglected to list Mott the Hoople (+Ian Hunter), but someone else did, as well as Sabbath, (but only up to IV for me) Trapeze (with Glenn Hughes especially, Medusa and You Are the Music are killer..there's your hard rock remedy) The Hollies (there's one that was forgotten, great vocals) Wishbone Ash (king of the harmony leads, great sounding guitar from Andy Powell) Rockpile (Dave Edmunds, Welshman i believe, along with Nick Lowe) David Bowie (the earlier stuff was great up to around Young Americans anyway...the stuff with Mick Ronson) T-Rex (Marc Bolan) someone mentioned that The Move/Wizzard/Roy Wood All the punk/wave bands pretty much covered already, although i'd throw in Elvis Costello & the Attractions.

That's probably true! My favorite songs by the BG's are "Holiday" and "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You". Nice psych style with plenty of mellotron. Happened that they were the A and B side of a single.

er and who was responsible for it ! YES the Brit's !!!
If we hadn't been involved in slaving and plantation owners, treating African slaves so badly then they would have written happy songs.
As usual, from the deepest pain and suffering comes the most powerful art.
Thankfully we live in more enlightened times and the end of slavery and ultimately, segregation in the Southern States made blues music accessible to a wider audience. Black GI based in the UK introduced us to it and the advent of easier international travel and communications has enabled the genre to reach a wider audience.
It's reminiscent of the folk music of Ireland, Scotland and even Lancashire and Yorkshire where times were hard.
I get really mad these days when someone manufactured girl band e.g. Spice Girls get awards in the R&B section.

If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

Very good points there, Brummie. We can certainly credit the Brits with a revival of The Blues, or in this case Rhythm and Blues which is pretty much what Rock music is, when there seemed to be a stagnation in this genre on the Pop Charts.
But don't forget, even John Lennon, one of the chief reasons for the "British Invasion" during that time really idolized a certain white dude from Tupelo, Mississippi who really began the widespred acceptance of Rock and Roll about a decade before Mr.Lennon and his british cohorts garnered much attention.
And, Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys were basically doing a lot of Chuck Berry riffs and making it big just before The Beatles made their impact, also.
