Ok, I don't know much but I'm willing to learn. I want to rejet, and do the air box mod. My question is, what is the purpose of the "air box?" I have seen bikes with an exposed air filter. So, basically, is there any way to eliminate the box entirely? I want to put more empty space between the rear tire and the belly of the bike.

Yep Tom (brokenfixed) did it and it looks cool. Maybe send him a PM or maybe he will chime in. Go look at his pix in the photo post pages.

There is a kit called the freak that is available from newbonneville.com to eliminate the airbox. The box serves two purposes. It smooths the flow of air so that the intake is quieter and so that you get the effect of having a larger filter by giving the air a larger place to be pulled into. When the engine starts pulling air through the filter, there is a pressure drop on the clean air side. When there is a large area to pull air from, the pressure drop is less and the larger vacuum area continues to pull air from the filter after the inlet valve closes so the other cylinder gets more on its intake stroke.

Tommy moved the better look at this but I'm thinking this is what you're wanting:

The freak kit cost a lot and I don't want to spend that much. I see people have used the unifilter with the air box mod. My ? is, can I use the unifilter and the dyno jet kit and remove the airbox completely?

It's better not to confuse this with an airbox mod, Tommy's is a complete air box removal and battery box relocation. Those are stock K&Ns that most folks call pods, there's a specific part number for each as the left and right are offset for clearance purposes. As for jets, this mod usually gets 45 pilots and some huge mains in the 140 to 155 range (unless you're at a much higher altitude which seems unlikely in NJ).
I recommend reading through Dinqua's most excellent carb site (link in the Tech Vault) and also a study of the Jenks Bolts Bonneville Tuning notes to get a firm grasp on the parameters before jumping in headfirst. It's not quite rocket science but it's not plug-and-play either, you need to understand a few Keihin CVK fundamentals so the experience won't be self defeating.

No the uni filter is a direct replacement for the origonal. Uni makes pods too but don't get the 2 confused like Ed told you. The K&N part numbers like you see on Toms bike and many others, and come with the Freak kit are RC-2890 and RC-2900 you can get those many different places they are just the K&N pod numbers.
