When I was looking at having some brackets made for me, I was told that stainless steel can't be chromed, it can be polished however. Just something you might want to look into, I could have also been told the wrong information. I went with mild steel anyways cause it has a cleaner cut when using a hi-def plasma, then I can paint it or chrome dip it as I see fit.
Very good point, I didn't think of that! Stainless is not magnetic so I think you may be right! I will check anyway but I may well end up with polished stainless
