Right near my house, on Friday, a crotch-rocket T-boned a pick-up truck at an intersection, and died, while traveling at a high rate of speed going down the middle suicide lane. He was apparently much too late for the yellow light. Now people in the community are treating this incident as “proof-positive” that motorcycles are too dangerous to own.

This is what we’re up against folks.

"Speedmaster" is a title not a name, - and the title is not plural.

No motorcycles are not "dangerous", Idiots who cant ride are..

I will be the first to admit, if you get in a crash with a bike you will be hurt,, much worse then if you were in a car. However if "bikers" rode their bikes with in the limits of the law, and saved running wide open for somewhere other then city traffic, motorcycle death rates would drop by a big % I am sure..

We have at least 1 bike related death here a week, some the cars fault, most the ridders fault. One can only tempt fate so many times ya know.

I know what you mean. My wife and I were in the cage the other day and saw a kid on a sport bike go around two cars that had stopped to run a light that had just turned red.

He made it through, but it was VERY close.

I guess I am at the age now where if they (cagers) want to kill me, they are going to have to do it, I am not up for helping them.

Thom I might be wrong, I sometimes am.

I've seen so many kids on sport bikes flying down the highway, popping wheelies at 70MPH. It's a wonder more of these kids don't become organ donors. It's that need for speed and power. We should start these kids off on Honda Rebels and make them ride them for 3 years before they graduate to a 500cc cruiser for 2 more years. Then and only if they haven't gotten a ticket of an accident give them a license for 650cc and above. at least we'll know they can handle the bike.

It's a phase we all go through as young men, we think we are invincible, well I can remember thinking that as a youngster. I do agree they need something to make these kids aware of "the need for speed" KILLS, you do not get a second chance at life..

True, when I was younger I rode like a maniac and it was a triple 2 stroke too,so I had all kinds of go with very little suspension to handle it. I used to corner and lean off the side of the bike and drag my knee to make corners. I crashed a few times luckily I lived in farm land and mostly just went skidding out across a field although I did miss a turn and go through a stone row once, that one really hurt. The accidents were back before I was old enough to have my lic. though. It used to be a game with me and my friend vs the local cop. We painted our bikes flat black and removed the tail light then went out at night looking for cop to "run" When we found one off goes the headlight and on with the fun.

EDIT: the triple was legal and I had my lic. then The flat black bikes were enduros, tail light removed so break light didn't give us away.

A 25 yr old "kid" (just 'cuz was younger than me) missed the sweeper turn by my house & right into the woods, ****** drunk & angry that he was evicted from the bar, he refused a ride home & took the keys to his bike. I feel lucky I wasn't home.

Donor cycle says it all.

I was young once, though, and invincible and I'm lucky enough to have lived. Like Ian, I had a 2 cycle three cylinder road rocket and it was way more bike than I was meant to learn on. These days I try to be more sedate but once in a while that hooligan shows up again, thankfully I have a milder engine under me that allows me to regain my senses.

Dont get me wrong I am the first one to throw a sport bike up on the rear tire and smile, but i do not do it on the interstate, or in traffic. I have a few times but not on purpos. I save that for the back lot at the shop. I have also been known to run a sport bike wide open, how ever it is on back roads with a lot of long straight aways, with no drive ways. Like i said there is a time and place for everything.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Aah! I see you might have figured out the reason for my subconscious misspelling the other night of your Helmholtz thingamabob's function, Wade!!!

I must have subconsciously figured that because you seem to be one of the more reasonable people around here, that that gizmo o' yours HAD to be the source of all that, and thus natually sprang my misspelling of it's function!

I and a few others have mentioned this before - riding "dirt" before riding on the street is a great way to get your head straight.
When you get your fill of trees jumping in front of you and doing flying "W" dismounts in the woods - not to mention learning how to navigate mud and rocky hills and ditches and briar patches - you know what kind of pain is available when you're on 2 wheels.
Once on the road, you realize most everything is now solid - nothing "gives" like it did in the woods...

That could make a big difference in the "need for speed" attitude to all except the most immortal morons.

Darwinian theory will prevail.

Also dirt ridin' will help with your balance, eye/hand coordinations, and reaction to sudden situation changes.

But, these young guys are just not thinkin' it through. When I was younger the same mindset youth were crashing and dieing in TAs and Z28s just about every weekend. It a shame but survival of the fittest not only is the best physical fit but the wisest.

Unfortunatley for the rest of us, the insurance rates go up and people look at us like we are mentally incompetent. Two things need to happen: 1. the irresponsible kids and adults on sportbikes need to wake up and sell their bikes before their family is forced to buy a coffin. 2: The good folks in cars and trucks are gonna have take some responsibility too by watching out for motorcyles and the other cars on the road. For every idiot on a crotch rocket you have dozens in a Camry or similar talkin' on the blame cell phone, or puttin' on makeup, or just in a daze.

Oh well, I'm glad I got that off my chest......

Its more fun to be ridin'! I'm still ridin
