Make sure you clean the tank with Alcohol or other degreaser before applying. You don't want to apply over wax, oil, grease, dirt, etc....

Or you could try Billy Mays' "Wonder Putty", it can pull trucks, hold the cables of the Golden Gate Bridge together, and is sandable.

You could craft your own knee pads....

I used to get that stuff at the hardware store or a walmart for 2 or 3 dollars. But his a green on the outside. That makes up for the increased price. I think they called it JB Weld. It actually works pretty good.

I had the Suzuki first. That got me back into motorcycles after 20+ years. It is two shades of blue. All stock with over 14000 miles on it. My first Triumph after 20 years was a Sunset Red/Black 06 Speedmaster. I totaled it with 7200 miles on it after 6 mos. I think that bike was jinxed. I replaced it with a mulberry red/graphite 06 America. It has over 16000 miles on it now. I put knee pads on both the triumphs. The hardest thing was lining them up the same on both sides but if you mess up you can pull them off and restick them at least once but its best to work the alignment out first. Find some reference points and hold the pad up to the tank and mark some edges with something that won't mess up your paint. ou Ycould use masking tape. I just eyeballed mine. I've got a friend that runs a sign shop who sprays a soap solution on the surface before sticking his sign vinyl but that stuff is thin enough to squeegy the liquid out from under the vinyl of the sign. I don't think that trick will work with the knee pads. BTW, the soap solutions allow you to move the thing your are sticking around until it is in place. Try to get each side a close to the other as possible. If they are a little off, I don't think anyone will notice. After all, its hard to look at each side using a side by side comparison. Take care.

I dont like my knee pads and will be removing them when I decide its time to repaint the tank. The rubber rubs off on my pants when I touch them. It comes off in the wash but look like a dork walking around with two black marks on the insides of my knees. (leave it alone people) I dont recommend them from my experience. Espcecially when they are wet.

I love mine, but the bike stays in a garage and I clean them with ArmorAll every time I wash the bike. I've never had a problem. The black rubber can deteriorate over time in sunlight. A protectorant like ArmorAll helps and prevents them from drying out. The black stuff coming off is decayed rubber material.

I haven't had any problem with mine marking up my clothes...yet. But I do see that as a problem. I use turtlewax car wash that has a wax in the wash. Since I ride just about every day, I may be keeping the deteriorated material rubbed off. I'll pay closer attention to them as time goes on. The armorall thing makes sense.
If anyone wants to take them off, just heat them with a hair dryer or heat gun and it should soften the adhesive allowiing them to be pulled off. Then a light solvent like rubbing alcohol to get any excess adhesive off the tank.
I put knee pads on mine for looks as much as function.

Be very careful how you line them up. Once they stick, they're stuck! There is no chance for a 'do over'.

I've had mine on since the summer of '02 without any black rubbing off but I have heard of some people having this problem.

Mine were peel & stick, CLEAN the surface first....put mine on within a week of purchase, i.e. a Triumph without knee pads looks funny ! ....that was 5 years ago...have not come off, not rubbed off on my clothing and the bike is ridden 12months out of the year (unless there is ice) ... and yes, I wear my "pretty clothes" on her when I go to Church and like most men, I have the same "pretty clothes" I had 5 years ago....the gear shift rubber has left a mark on my wing tips though
