I haven't had any problem with mine marking up my clothes...yet. But I do see that as a problem. I use turtlewax car wash that has a wax in the wash. Since I ride just about every day, I may be keeping the deteriorated material rubbed off. I'll pay closer attention to them as time goes on. The armorall thing makes sense.
If anyone wants to take them off, just heat them with a hair dryer or heat gun and it should soften the adhesive allowiing them to be pulled off. Then a light solvent like rubbing alcohol to get any excess adhesive off the tank.
I put knee pads on mine for looks as much as function.
