I love mine, but the bike stays in a garage and I clean them with ArmorAll every time I wash the bike. I've never had a problem. The black rubber can deteriorate over time in sunlight. A protectorant like ArmorAll helps and prevents them from drying out. The black stuff coming off is decayed rubber material.
