Hello team, I am thinking about putting K&N pod filters on my Speedy.I know the Freak kit will do this but I didn't want the bracketing for the sidecovers etc.

So, if I put on the billet intake manifolds from NewBonneville, can the pod filtes be installed without extra supporting brackets??

I would still put some sort of support on the back side of the carbs to take the pressure off the intakes. This can be accomplished very easily and cheaply with a simple turnbuckle from the hardware store. Put one end around the tube going between the top of the carbs and the other end up to the top engine mount. I did a quick search and didn't see it but I know someone posted this and had a pic or 2 of it as well.

Before I bought Brent's carb brace, I used a metal strap with an insulated p-clamp. Looked cheesy but it worked.

I used the p clamp with a SS barrel type turnbuckle. Looks good and works. Brent sells just the brace.

I don't see any performance increase with billet manifolds over just blue printing and smoothing what you have. (blue printing = make sure there are no lips where the manifolds meet the head)

The only purpose of changing to the billet manifold was for their support as opposed to the rubber tube that is the stock connection.

Oh I see but then how do you attach the carbs to them? They don't have a flange on the front of them.

EDIT: I just went and looked at them, there is still a rubber part that clamps to the carb so my answer on supporting the back remains unchanged and would even if there was no rubber part. To be honest I like the original design better than that clamp to bolted flange design.

But, re: blueprinting, the factory exhaust coupler can introduce a speed bump.
At least it did on my '03.
No problem to buzz it out of there, but something to watch for.

Unless you switch to a carb that actually bolts to a manifold instead of plugging into a rubber hose, you will need some sort of support.

Originally, rubber sections were used to isolate the carb from vibration, which made the fuel froth. We don't have much vibration, but I wouldn't want to eliminate the rubber section.

when I did the air box removal and battery relocation I used a 10mm zip tie to brace the carbs from the engine mount plate. 8000km later and no problems'

All my old Triumphs the Amals bolted right to the intake with a piece of bakelite between to reduce heat transfer.
