Hiya all All things being equal and with the wind in the right direction, myself and the better half should be visiting Vegas in May. I was there briefly but she hasn't and I think a couple of days will be more than enough ... So we want to get out and about a bit and were going to rent a car but the better half asked about a bike .. RESULT!!! Anyone have any suggestions or good experiences with rental companies? Yeah, I know it'll more than likely be H-D. Also .. we'll need to buy helmets (rather than drag our own with us) - any good bike shops? God help us we should end up with the rental H-D helmets ... oh the shame!!! Last time I rode in the US I tried no helmet and loved it (invalidating my insurance aside!). Anyway, am I correct in saying that NV, UT, AZ and CA all require helmets? I have a 1/2 lid I bought last time I was in the US and might be able to take that but I might just say "what the hey" and add to my collection! Thanks guys and gals in advance for any help / advice.

You can go helmetless in Utah, Nevada and Arizona. California requires a helmet.

Before posting I did a Google search and the site said lids were required in all the states mentioned over 18yrs old! Just goes to show you can't trust all the crap on the net!
I'll go without a helmet then ... NO NO NO, I can't!!

Thanks Matthew, generous offer buddy. I have DOT helmet ... I'll just have to take off the UK racing approved sticker I covered it with!

Wrong answer. Nevada requires helmet use.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with the rental companies here. There are a few besides HD though, some googling should turn them up. I'm pretty sure the BMW dealer rents, and some places have Wings available. Let me know if you would like me to check any out in person, I'll be glad to do it.
I'm sure you can find helmets without any problem. Cycle Gear comes to mind.

Thanks Bill, I tried the lazy option to begin with ... ba.com member experiences! I'm sure if the trip is a definite, I'll be trawling the pages of Google. The idea of a 'Wing appeals - for novelty value alone. I'm just scared that Wendy will be so comfy that she'll want me to trade the ST in! BMW is always another option. I gotta say though, the H-D Street Glide I rented before was very comfortable (MASSES of vibration until 2000 revs aside) and the radio / cd player was a bonus .... Cd player?? WTF???

I had an Electra-Glide from Eagle Rider in LA a few years ago. No problems. ( Well apart from the oil light coming on when it was very hot crossing Golden Gate ) http://www.eaglerider.com/Default.aspx?tabid=85

According to the 2008 HOG Touring Handbook...
AZ, Helmet required for under age 18. CA, Helmet required for everyone, even on a push scooter. NV, Helmet required. UT, Helmet required for under age 18. NM, (just in case you wander over this way) Reflectorized helmet required under age 18. Other than that, probably the least motorcycle restricted state in the union.

I've rented twice from the HD shop in Las Vegas, and both times was pleased with the bikes and the service. They will provide DOT helmets for the rider and passenger included with the rental, (at least last time I was there.) If you take your own, it will be unsure if they will allow you using a non-DOT. I preferred my novelty half shell, so I rode out with theirs, and carried it in the bags while I wore mine...same on return.
later, Tom.
But, what do I know?

I rented a BMW 1200RT from BMW of Las Vegas. Very nice people and they loaned me a helmet as well.
Be sure to take the extra insurance on anything you rent!!!

Thats all correct - since I have ridden in all those places...also Colorado does NOT require a helmet over 18. Just in case......

My friends from Hawaii and I have rented bikes from LV H-D several times. Very pleased with the bikes and the service. Because it is a rental, you do need to wear a helmet. I've never taken out the extra insurance, but my Hawaii insurance would've covered it.
We brought our own helmets, they didn't bother to check what they were. I prefer a full face just because the wind is so drying, usually leave the shield cracked a bit. If you wear a half helmet, bring a couple of scarves to cover your face.
LV H-D has so many bikes, that if you don't like your first choice, just ask for something different. They have you ride the bikes around their parking lot to make sure you're ok with your choice.
The first time we (Dangerous Curves Hawaii) walked in there, we hadn't thot about renting bikes, a last minute decision. They were a bit suprised when ten gals walked up to the counter and said we wanted to rent bikes. No problem, they even gave us a discount... Ok, we talked them into it! <G>
Personally, I'd get a Road Glide. It's a bit more sporty and still very comfortable. Suggestion...since they're running 24 hour rentals, even if it's a multi day rental, by the time you get there in the morning and get signed out, half the day is already gone.
Get their van service, or a taxi from your hotel and get your bike late in the afternoon. Then the next morning you can start out very early and get more riding in while it's a bit cooler. Dont' forget to grab a road map or two...
Have fun. I love riding out there in the desert. Oh there's also Indian Casinos you can stop at to grab lunch while you're riding....and to make sure the slots are working properly! <G> Mary

Once again Montana is ommitted. We're not at the end of the road, but you can almost see it from here.

C'mon! You conveniently forgot to mention having to travel the length of Navada and through Idaho to even get to the Montana border!! The shortest distance is the better part of 600 miles ... and that's as the crow flies!

I MEAN, $68.50 per day!! Over here, that would JUST about get you a Ford KA for the day!!! WTF????? Though being convertible, it might ruin my hair .... bwhahahahaha Oh yeah, they do this ... ... for $199 per day ... not much room for Wendy and any luggage though Do ya think Wendy would mind driving the Mustang while I rode the chop??
