I couldn't find a good shot of the tranny opened up to see the parts. The only ways It would hurt anything would be if it was so heavy it pulled or pushed on the gear without operator pressure,in other words it didn't return to and stay in the neutral position 2 nd way would be pushing too hard on the shift lever,it would add quite a bit of leverage. As long as that shifter returns it wouldn't cause any more damage than the foot shift. I have worked on enough of them over the last 30 years to know this beyond any doubt. I worked on particularly that had the hand shift right on the shaft coming out of the trans and I rebuilt that engine twice without ever having to do any work to the trans. Thats over 50,000 with a hand shift that I knew the bike.(when I say rebuild I mean top end )

EDIT: It came to me with the hand shift too so I don't know how many miles were on it before he brought it to me for the first top end.If you pull your outer cover you will see what
I mean, watch the kick start spring if you do.
