I'm ready for some new paint. My now x-girlfriend's mother's fiance is a professional airbrush artist. He was going to repaint my whole bike with some custom dark green flames that had a pearl escence over the top so they would change colors as you walk by it. My mistake I break up with her after 3.5 years in November and he of course won't do it anymore . I wouldn't need a repaint if it wasn't for a large deep scratch in the top of the tank right where everyone sees it. So anyone know anyone who can do what I described in a timely and cost efficient fashion? Preferably somewhat close to Kansas City, MO.

By the way the single life is much better than I remembered it 3.5 years ago.

So getting back together for the free paint job isn't going to happen?

Sounds reasonable to me, but he better wait until after Valentines day to give her a call. No gifts that way....

Hey Aaron,
If it was me, I'd be most interested in a painter who has done work on motorcycle tins before.
I'd probably check with a couple of dealers (Engle or ElDorado Springs) to see if they could recommend someone for paint.
Good Luck.

There is a woman that paints bikes advertising on unitedbikers.com... I think that is correct site. I dont know any thing of her work, just seen her ad's. If that dosent work out I work with a guy that builds street rods his dad has a paint booth at his house. They wont be cheap but my coworker's truck has a very good paint job, ugly color but good work. This is at Hillsdale, Ks. PM me if you are intrested in checking out their work. I only get on puter about once per week

I know a little about this type of paint, labor intensive and expensive, so be prepared to dish out some cash!

Well I'm now with a girl who's dad is a lawyer that can be pretty useful on my side. I actually talked to the x today and her mom's fiance is going to help me out and do it anyways. SWEET!!! Sounds like he's going to go easy on the pockets as well for being his advertisement and getting his name out there.

After you get it done, post pics and the name of his shop.

Let me give you a little background as I know that a painter of cars isn't necessarily a painter of curvy motorcycle parts. He's around 50 yrs old with an extensive background. Started out his life in FL managing a pit crew for nascar. In his spare time/off season he airbrushed street rods and has 3-4 cars that made it on covers of hot rod magazine and another one of those magazines. 15 years later he moved to Kansas City where he is now. He became a teacher at M.I.T. in air brush development. He worked there teaching 1000's of students. In his spare time and summers off he specified in airbrushing motorcycles. He liked doing the motorcycles due to less items to paint, but more curves to add his art. I've seen he work and I loose myself in how deep some of his stuff goes. You know when you're looking at an airbrush picture and its just detail after detail that just goes on and on. Thats what I'm talking about. Can't wait to get his hands on this for me. I'll be sure to show everyone here what he does for my bike. I really trust this guy with seeing his capabilities.

Ok he gave me a quote today. Dark green ghost flames with a pearl final coat. Just tank and 2 fenders is $1200. Is this a bit steep? I'm working on two more quotes just to see what things compare to.

Wow! 1200 g's! As usual, I find out I'm in the wrong business! (Although, to be fair, even the rather ordinary paints and thinners I use to do my own stuff usually winds up around $400 just for materials)

No. Not for custom paint. Can you get it cheaper? Possibly.

I guess my dilemma now is. $1200 for custom paint or $600 for factory fresh new tank and new paint on it. minus whatever I can get for my old tank. See the only reason why I'm getting it painted is due to the previous owner putting a nice deep scratch in the top of the tank right where everyone that walks up to it can see and say "dude what happened there?" I think if I do the factory tank, I can get a set of those custom peg hangers and still come out cheaper than the custom paint.

I guess what shocked me in all this is I helped this dude move 3 times using my truck to help. Now he doesn't even care and charges me what everyone else is. What a guy.

Is it worth an extra $600 to you to have custom paint or would you be happy with factory "custom" paint that you might see on another bike?

BTW, a "real" custom paint job, like a Mike Lavallee true fire paint job, costs more than double what you were quoted.

It all depends on what level of custom you want.

Is there no way to repaint your tank that would suit you short of the full blown custom job?
Put another way, are you considering buying a new one in order to get the factory two tone and striping?
What would it cost to redo your tank in factory colors?
Whould you be happy with a solid color?
Have you been watching Ebay?

When I got my 'custom' tank from Triumph there was no one in the UK who posted on here that had one. Since then I've seen loads.

If I knew of someone who could have done a tank for me at a reasonable price then I'd take them up on it. The prices you are quoting are about 1 1/2 times the price of just the 'custom' tank. And you get it exactly as you want it, not what someone at Hinckley thinks you want it.

But I am happy with my custom tank.

Sounds to me like you mainly just want the scratch fixed. Have you gotten estimates for a "repaint" rather than "custom paint?"

Its $350-$500 for just the scratch fixed. I'm pokin around for a used tank now that someone would want to get rid of.

You may consider painting it yourself. Enough "how to's" on the web. I just priced out paint and cleaners, clear, hardeners, primer, etc etc during lunch today and materials are under $200. I have a bud who has done some painting and the results are as good or better then the local body shops. It's your bike and your passion so I would expect the care and nurturing to be greater then someone without a vested interest..

I'm torn between a dark blue pearl and a dark burnt orange pearl... I'm thinking the orange and then add the knee pads for some contrast.....

being able to spray clearcoat takes practice and a decent gun. if you want to have a showroom like shine with minimal buffing a very good gun like a sata would eb the way to go. but it can get pricey for good tools and supplies
