Folks: Due to my Kewllock debacle, I now have a credit that I have to spend with Kuryakyn. I have everything but the flat gas cap, so might as well get that item. Is there a specific number for the one that fits our bikes, or are they one-size-fits-all?

Can't remember the number, but it's the one to fit HD right hand tanks, with the vent.

The Kuryakyn part number is #8309 and is called: Vented Flush Mount Gas Cap. It initially was designed for right hand thread HD models. It comes with a couple of gaskets. Any will work, but the largest one allows the cap to sit more flush in the dash.
It has been reported that this cap will not fit some 06 and all 07 and 08 models due to tighter neck threading. I suppose there was a template or die change. Mine is an 05, it fits great and I love it.

I found a spare key at the local Harley shop. I keep one on my regular keys and the other on my spare set. Besides looks, it does offer some security as far as gas theft. I don't think it happens much, but it might when gas goes up another couple of dollars!

Does anyone have an early 06 that they have put this cap on. Mine was Mfg. in 10-05, just was wondering when they might have changed? Phil

I got one for my bike (06 TA) and it didn't fit. I got on the threads with a disk grinder and files and worked it out. I've had no other problems. I bought my bike in July 06. I think it was made in the spring 06. You may want to look for one that fits first time unless you are handy with tools.

Being a gamler I just ordered one to my 06 BA for the better or worse. Will be interesting to see if it fits.

Sven, If it don't fit, its easy enough to make it fit. Just don't take off too much material because once it is gone, you can't put it back. I hope you've got one of the tanks that it will work with.

I wish they would fix this for the 07 models. I hate the stock gas cap.

I've been on the road this week, opening a store in Connecticut so I haven't had a chance to order my cap yet - how much do they cost?

Thanks Dog. I have to order direct from Kuryakyn as I have a credit with them. I'll post how much it is from them. We're opening a restaurant up here, and I keep thinking about this at 10 PM, long after Kuryakyn closed... Al Quote:

Here's an earlier picture I took of my clock, but also is a good picture of the cap.

Gee that was quick Bob, thanks for the pic. It's small but still give's me an idea of what it'll look like. Certainly much better than stock that's for sure. So you say you have an 05 TBA and it fits right on. Does anyone know if the 05 SM will fit the cap?

I was going to post a couple pix but I don't know how much better than that either one would be. They are in the link in my signature if you want to look. One of closer but half the cap is cut off in the pic and I don't know if you can see it any better in the other.

Thanks Ian, I had closer look at your pics again and yes, the Kury cap is definitely a nice inclusion.

I bought mine over a year ago at a swap meet. It didn't come with a key. I've never needed it so never bothered to get one. It can easily be opened with your fingers placed in the gaps where that plastic key goes. I also didn't like the size of that key.
I'm sure if I had one I probably would have used it!

Finally got around to ordering my gas cap direct from Kury. ($56 shipped) Will this cap old down the chrome, plastic dash piece any snugger than the factory cap? The reason I ask is one of the two top allen-bolt holes is stripped and the fastener doesn't really pull the dash cover snug any more.
If it doesn't, is there an easy way to repair those threads to grab the fastener?

It's totally independent on my tank, no contact at all with the dash. I wonder if you can find a helicoil for that spot at this web site: Tool Source

I agree with the helicoil, my gas cap doesn't hold the dash at all either.

Thanks, thought maybe I could smear in some JB Weld or the like, than clean the threads up. The bolt really doesn't have any stress on it.

I wouldn't JB weld it if you plen on taking off at some future point or maybe even more than once. Might get away with it if you never disturb it. Maybe find a slightly larger self tapping stainless screw.

It definitely has to come off, with some frequency. I guess what I meant with the JB weld was, could I smear some on top of the tank-mount fastener, let it get hard than run a tap of the right size through? Or is just putting a helicoil in the tank mount just as easy? Quote:

Al, it takes a few more steps but it will be a permanent solution. You drill out the offending threads, tap for the helicoil and insert the coil which gives you new threads that will outlast the original, maybe even the bike

OK, I want to do it right. That mount is very slim - I've never used a helicoil before but that area only offers a few thread rings. A helicoil will work on a spot that thin? Quote:

Finished my valve-job and pick-up coil check, those are two awful jobs! Put the tank back on and installed the Kury gas cap. Very nice and resolves my peeling tank problem. Still need to do the helicoil on the dash cover mount, just too frigging tired this evening for any more tasks!

Folks - I'm interested in adding the Kuryakyn 8309 vented gas cap to my new 2008 America. I read mention of issues on it fitting later models, but some found way to make it fit by removing thread material, etc...
Any more detail on what exactly the modifications are? Is it matter of diameter, or threads?
Thanks

It didn't fit for me on my 05 but would like to understand more about the folks who have ground the threads a bit to get it to fit and try again.

I'm surprised it didn't fit your '05. I only thought the problems were with '06 and later models. Had no problem putting it on my '05.

Man I like the look of the cap on our scoots. I just don't want to get one and screw it up. Maybe later on they will produce one for the 08 and above.

I doubt Kuryakyn will make a different one for Triumph. The one everyone is using was designed for a Harley. It just was a good fit for the Triumphs, at least until later models.

Yes, I must have the only 05 that the cap will not fit. I am taking PC's guidance and filing down the inside of the threads. When comparing to my stock cap the threads on the Kury are not as deep. They are the right gap but just not deep enough. I will try and take some pics when the project is done.
