I can not speak to the bolt's length issue but the Sissy Bar/Rack rear mounting post's shoulder measures 17/32" and the standard rear post's shoulder measures 25/32". With no sissy bar in hand I'm guessing that it's bracket fills in the area that follows the curve of the rear fender and that requires a lower profile attachment. edit: FYI: I measured the standard post on my bike with the bag on this morning before coming to work so that could be off 1/32".
