I never compared the posts side by side but from what I have seen I think it's just the bolts. The posts sit nice and flush with a back rest but there is a gap under them on bikes I have seen without the back rest leading me to think the posts are the same with or without. Like I said I could be mistaken since I never held them next to each other but have seen both on bikes.
