I suspect the rest of the gang was going on experience learned from jumping a dead bike with a car and having the charging system overtax itself trying to charge a dead/defective battery and keep the rest of the bikes electrics alive simultaneously.
After 30 years of working with thousands of amperes everyday as part of my job I do understand very well that voltage not current is the damaging element in power applications. Non-defective electrical apparatus will only draw the current it requires to operate and no more.
