Left my ignition on and now I barely get anything from the headlight.. Gotta be somewhere in an hour...
Can I jump the bike from my car using cables.. or will I end up frying something out?

Yep, just leave the car off and get the jumper off PDQ.

You can jump from a car. Both 12 volts.

DO NOT jump a bike off with a car...ever.. way too many cranking amps. Sure you may get lucky this time and maybe next but it can.. and has (in my case) cause damage to your charging system.

Second gear, full choke, run like h*ll,dump the clutch/drop one cheek on the seat, crack the gas after you hear it catch. Good luck.

Yeah what was said about CCA and such. However, in your case at least, you can get by with a 'pop the clutch' start. However, those with bad batteries cannot. You need a charged battery to run the sickle. the charging system will not keep it running. Your newly drained battery still has/had enough excited electrons to get er dun. A bad battery does not. Ask Bill from Ottawa. Eh? As Pete and I are heard huffing (exertional not recreational) away in the Lafayette parking lot.

Jumping with a car bat'tree calls to mind that scene from the rocky horror picture show, "It's Alive" IT'S ALIVE!!!!" as St. Elmo's (as in St. Erasmus) fire dances round the pointy bits of metal. A stench of ozone wafts up to ones nostrils.

This is when one of those cigarette lighter to cigarette lighter chargers works great. You plug them into the bike and the car. DON'T try starting the bike or the car. Just let the car charge your battery for 15 or 20 mins through the cigarette lighter. Then remove the charger and the bike should start. I have a cigarette lighter/aux power port adapter that I can plug into my battery tender pig tail. You can buy the whole setup at Walmart for under $5.00.

Idunnoboutdat, Moe. At the end of the NY rally, just after fully loading and preping for departure, I found I had to do the Run / pop jump start to get her going (It's a bugger trying to push and hop onto a fully laden scoot and find the seat - It took 2 attempts). I rode her all the way home with only one more 'shakey' moment (there was always enough power to 'click' and not always enouph to turn the starter. Maybe if FULLY dead, it won't sustain, but, I was able to go a few hundred miles counting only on the charging system.

If you have some 10 or 12 gauge wire, use that to connect up to the car battery. Wait a little while to get some charge in the bike battery, disconnect and then start the bike. That wire can't pass as much current as a jumper cable, so it's safer.

Also, there's this. Charging systems on bike, as well as cars for that matter are not meant to be true battery chargers. They are better described as battery maintainers. Using your alternator to charge a completely dead battery over taxes it. Alternator or strators aint cheap for these bikes. Check the prices.

Plus in most cases a charging system will not bring a battery back to a full charge.

Does this apply to battery chargers with a jump start feature? Mine has 1.5, 10 and 50 amp settings. I charge with 1.5 amp, but if I need a jump, I switch to 50 and away I go. Possible damage here?

I am no wizard when it comes to things electrical, but did you ever try the 10 amp setting? The alternator puts out about 27 amps at higher rpms. 50 may be a bit of a jolt, even though that's much less than the CCA's of a basic car battery...

Fellows, Could you please explain the above statement? Maybe I'm missing something here! example... If I have a 1.5 volt light bulb and hook it up to a 1.5 volt D cell, it will light up. If I hook up 50 1.5 volt D cells in parallel and then hook them up to the same 1.5 volt light bulb, it will still light up with no problem. There is a lot more amperage available but it is still rated for 1.5 volts. What is the difference with a 12 volt motorcycle battery vs a 12 volt automotive battery.

If you could fit a car battery in your bike, it would function just like a bike battery. The only difference is that you would be able to crank your starter for a lot longer.

I realize the potential for arcing and damage to the charging system is a lot greater if you ground out a jumper lead because of the large amperage potential with the automotive battery but you can still jump start your bike in a pinch. Just make sure the car isn't running like Oldroadie stated.

One last statement, there is always the safety aspect of jump starting. Any battery can explode when jump started depending on how you jumpered the cables and the internal condition of the battery. I've seen at least a dozen batteries explode over the years. Some because of loose connections, some because of internal shorting. If you don't know what you are doing, don't do it.

I have included a couple of links on "Jump starting Motorcycles"
http://www.msgroup.org/tip.aspx?num=104
http://www.cyclemaintenance.com/elec/jump_starting.htm

This link states that you can boost from an Auto but make sure it is not running.

Its the 12th now, I think he missed work.

Thats right Gregger. With the car off 12v is always 12v. The math does not change.

I suspect the rest of the gang was going on experience learned from jumping a dead bike with a car and having the charging system overtax itself trying to charge a dead/defective battery and keep the rest of the bikes electrics alive simultaneously.

After 30 years of working with thousands of amperes everyday as part of my job I do understand very well that voltage not current is the damaging element in power applications. Non-defective electrical apparatus will only draw the current it requires to operate and no more.

I nede uplate.. but I found the perfect solution to my problem.
Bought a new battery.
(the old one wouldn't even take a charge from my local mechanic.)
Lesson learned.. but thanks all for the input. Lots of agreeing to disagree here?.

It's always great to find an easy solution. I think we're all agreed that the bike's charging system is meant primarily for maintenance and not to charge a dead battery so here are two words of advice: Battery Tender.
