Just watched a TV program about UK Traffic Cops in Portsmouth. Until a couple of years ago, because driving without a licence, tax, MOT or insurance was not an arrestable offence, any drivers caught without documents were issued with a 'producer' - they had 7 days to take their documents to a Police Station for inspection. In most cases they didn't bother turning up and nothing was done. More recently the worst case scenario was that they would get a fixed penalty fine.

Now the law has changed. Due to computer and telecoms technology, automatic license plate recognition systems, plus cross referencing license, Tax and Insurance data, within seconds illegally operated vehicles are identified and ARE confiscated on the spot.

The driver then has 14 days to produce proof of tax/license/insrance pay £105 tow charge and £14 per day storage or the car gets crushed.

The look on their faces when they were expecting a 'producer' and the flat back turned up was golden !

In the UK they estimate that 20% of motor vehicles are untaxed and uninsured. A lot of vehicles are not registered and are used as 'crime pool' cars for robberies etc.

The Cops were elated that at last they had some teeth to deal with these criminals who have in the past just got away with it.

yep this number plate recongition is well advanced.in BP petrol stations they check your number before it starts the fuel.so hopefully soon you wont be able to get fuel unless you are legal. saying that. not seen or heard of anything about anyone getting stopped or police called at services. only know this as a few signs on pumps.

The whole idea about BP checking on my number plates fills me with dread. Does this mean that the whole data protection act is a waste of time. If BP or any private company has acccess to my insurance details or to information held by the government surely somebody where is in breach of this law.

We already have too much of a nanny state but to allow our personal details to be made available to private companies and individuals is a real step in the wrong direction.

I value my privacy. I stop unsolicited mail I try where possible to prevent my details being "sold" to mailing companies. Now it looks like the government is selling my details to big business. Its enough to make you want to puke.

I cannot decide whether to be a good example or a horrible warning ! Peace & respect http://www.tomcc.org/gg/ Eric

I don't know how the system there works (and it's the first I've heard of it) but most likely the BP stations are sending the licence plate no, and only getting a "yes" or "no" answer, not specific details. EFTPOS works the same way... it sends a request for X amount of money to be transferred to the vendor's account, and either gets a yes or no response. The vendor can't get your account details, balance etc.

That's not to say that if you drove away without paying they then couldn't press a "stole petrol" button which'd report your license plate to police who'd then get access to the rest of your information, but that then is legitimate use.

Same here but the DVLA info is available on-line to the Police. There they have MOT details now that they are done 'on-line' and to TAX a vehicle you need to produce a valid insurance certificate so again the TAX status is known at the DVLA.

Gordy and his boys are watching you.......

You don't have any. I don't have any. Unless you live in a rural 3rd world country nobody has any privacy anymore. It's already gone.
