One thing i've learned is to never offer what 'you' think is 'reasonable'. Take what your version of reasonable and lowball that a bit. Even if they scoff, shrug it off. The price will only go up, you can't come down on a price once you've offered it. Start at around 3k. Then he can haggle with you a bit. It will probably end up around 3.5k, maybe not, maybe he'll take the 3k and run. you don't know until you try and you could save some bucks for whatever the bike may need.
My dad was an old horse trader from way back. 'Belly up to the bar' he'd always say, don't be afraid to make an offer. (He'd probably offer a grand or 1500 for that bike!) I bought a piece of land (an empty lot) using his advice. They started at over 50k...i got it for 10k! After i made the offer they took it without any haggling. It had been for sale for a long time. It was next door to my home.
