Looking for a little advice on a possible upcoming purchase. I was able to locate a 2002 America with approximately 11,000 miles. The bike was well kept and also comes with saddlebags and a sissy bar. Other then that not much more information to provide. How much should I offer? As always thank you for your time and help.

Used 2002 Americas on cycletrader with considerably less mileage seem to be priced around the 5K range. I guess the real question is what is the seller asking and how much are you willing to spend? It may be that you can get a much newer bike for what they are asking, or you might be able to get a sweet deal on that one.

Cheers,
Brad

I've seen anywhere from $4K to $6K. I would lean towards to $4K side. It is a 6 year old bike after all. Some would say the 2002's are desirable. It's the year of the fire, 100th Anniversary, limited production, first year, etc....

I wonder if its one of our members bikes.

I would need more information, accessories especially.

It could be a members bike. It has saddle bags and a sissy bar, very stock.

The bike was taken care of like most responsible motorcycle owners. Does everyone think a offer of $3800 will be the best offer or should I go for $4000. The current asking price is $4600 OBO.

You are right on target bud. The big part of a sale is what a willing buyer will pay a willing seller. Get it bought and get riding son. We can always use Texas riders. Texas riders are the best by the way. I was just told that, it may not be true

3800 sounds like a good respectful offer, willing to move to 4K sounds reasonable, our bikes do not hold their value as well as some other brands......6 year old ride with 11,000 miles, if cared for reasonably there's lots of miles left in her..... go for it, Ride safe

Ditto. It will need the valve shims checked (due at 14k) soon and that's a few hundred at a shop. Use that as a bargaining chip. Also new tires might be needed. IF the tires are old and the valves not done, I'd open at $3,600.

3300 sounds like a fair start offer.

Texas ain't THAT far from Pensacola . Go get that slick '05 that's on eBay with less than 1,000 miles . It's Mulberry and Graphite , they are not as fast , but more sensitive .

May need brakes too. There was a recall on the front reservoir too. Was that done? (never did my '03 - no big deal)

Bikes are an emotional thing. Why is he selling it? If his dog died, his wife left him, and his pickup got stolen you may want to help a brother out.

If he wants to buy a different brand - flog him like a rented mule...

Correct, but they later in the movie changed their mind and became the Knights who say... ”Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-PTANG. Zoom-Boing. Z'nourrwringmm.

Knight 2: NI.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is one of the funniest movie ever made, here are the lines in another scene:

[Holding the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch]
King Arthur: How does it... um... how does it work?
Sir Lancelot: I know not, my liege.
King Arthur: Consult the Book of Armaments.
Brother Maynard: Armaments, chapter two, verses nine through twenty-one.
Cleric: [reading] And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the Lord did grin. And the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths, and carp and anchovies, and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit-bats and large chu...
Brother Maynard: Skip a bit, Brother...
Cleric: And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.
Brother Maynard: Amen.
All: Amen.
King Arthur: Right. One... two... five.
Galahad: Three, sir.
King Arthur: Three.

Sorry for hijacking the tread!

And another one:

Bridgekeeper: Stop. Who would cross the Bridge of Death must answer me these questions three, ere the other side he see.
Sir Lancelot: Ask me the questions, bridgekeeper. I am not afraid.
Bridgekeeper: What... is your name?
Sir Lancelot: My name is Sir Lancelot of Camelot.
Bridgekeeper: What... is your quest?
Sir Lancelot: To seek the Holy Grail.
Bridgekeeper: What... is your favourite colour?
Sir Lancelot: Blue.
Bridgekeeper: Go on. Off you go.
Sir Lancelot: Oh, thank you. Thank you very much.
Sir Robin: That's easy.
Bridgekeeper: Stop. Who would cross the Bridge of Death must answer me these questions three, ere the other side he see.
Sir Robin: Ask me the questions, bridgekeeper. I'm not afraid.
Bridgekeeper: What... is your name?
Sir Robin: Sir Robin of Camelot.
Bridgekeeper: What... is your quest?
Sir Robin: To seek the Holy Grail.
Bridgekeeper: What... is the capital of Assyria?
[pause]
Sir Robin: I don't know that.
[he is thrown over the edge into the volcano]
Sir Robin: Auuuuuuuugh.
Bridgekeeper: Stop. What... is your name?
Galahad: Sir Galahad of Camelot.
Bridgekeeper: What... is your quest?
Galahad: I seek the Grail.
Bridgekeeper: What... is your favourite colour?
Galahad: Blue. No, yel...
[he is also thrown over the edge]
Galahad: auuuuuuuugh.
Bridgekeeper: Hee hee heh. Stop. What... is your name?
King Arthur: It is 'Arthur', King of the Britons.
Bridgekeeper: What... is your quest?
King Arthur: To seek the Holy Grail.
Bridgekeeper: What... is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?
King Arthur: What do you mean? An African or European swallow?
Bridgekeeper: Huh? I... I don't know that.
[he is thrown over]
Bridgekeeper: Auuuuuuuugh.
Sir Bedevere: How do know so much about swallows?
King Arthur: Well, you have to know these things when you're a king, you know.

I LOVE that movie!! LOL

Like these guys are saying, start out at $3800, and work from there. Even if you go up to $4200, that's still not bad for a 6 year (just barely) old bike with only 11,000 on the clock. That's really just broken in at under 2k miles a year. And, if the owner can show proof of maintenance, and it looks reasonably well cared for, all the better. Git'r done son!

One thing i've learned is to never offer what 'you' think is 'reasonable'. Take what your version of reasonable and lowball that a bit.
Even if they scoff, shrug it off. The price will only go up, you can't come down on a price once you've offered it. Start at around 3k. Then he can haggle with you a bit. It will probably end up around 3.5k, maybe not, maybe he'll take the 3k and run. you don't know until you try and you could save some bucks for whatever the bike may need.

My dad was an old horse trader from way back. 'Belly up to the bar' he'd always say, don't be afraid to make an offer. (He'd probably offer a grand or 1500 for that bike!)
I bought a piece of land (an empty lot) using his advice. They started at over 50k...i got it for 10k! After i made the offer they took it without any haggling. It had been for sale for a long time. It was next door to my home.

Just my dos centavos.

Addendum:
It really hinges on how bad he needs to sell it and possibly how long he's tried to sell it. Like what was already posted here, mention all the things and labor that you'll probably have to purchase later....ie: tires, brake pads, valve work, etc etc.

Not for 6K either But I did Buy Cinnamon Girl for 3 grand. Actually a bit more but the corbin saddle and backrest were included and they were worth the amount above the 3 grand.

When someone is trading in a sickle and they get low balled they might consider selling it themselves for more than the low ball price and still feel like they got more than they would have. Thus everyone is happy. A man has a sickle to sell then make a offer? Lots of bikes at high FAIR prices. See if you can get the owner the cash he needs in trade for the bike you could ride. What do you have to loose?

Just my opinion, If I was asking $4600 for a bike and someone offered me $3000, I would be miffed and refuse to negotiate.
I would rather keep the bike than sell it to someone who had offended me.
