I just had a new tyre fitted to the front. I hadn't wore the tyre in. I had to anchor the brakes at a round-a-bout. The front went from under me like I was on ice. (the road was dry). Damage to bike: Front fender cracked, just needs chopping down a bit. Clutch lever scratched Left wing mirror scratched Left footpeg snapped off The bars that hold the forward controls is bent. Small dint in exhaust. Side stand bent under slightly. Apart from a nicely bruised hand and pride... I'm ok

Glad you're OK, Nick. Sorry about the bike damage. What brand tyre did you buy? I may want to avoid that purchase.

I thought you meant something Nick in your post on the campsite, your pride can be fixed and also the bike mate as long as you did not suffer any broken bones..
Interested to know what tyre you fitted on the front though, or was it simply you had not worn it in yet

OOh yeh please Gina.. I could use that peg The tyre was a Metzeler... the guy at the garage suggested I take it really easy because all new tyres have a kind of oil on the rubber as it comes out of the press and 100 miles are needed to get it off. I was only doing 20ish and had to anchor on I wasn't even banking Whatever that dbl bar that holds the footpegs is called.. I'm sure its cheap enough and also comes in chrome How come this post got moved to accessories??

The Foot control Bar comes in chrome and is £79.99. part number A9738089.
I think I was told to take it easy on my Metzelers for 200 miles. However I had them put on and then rode 300 miles up north....so that kinda covered that! I'd go back and check the road surface where it happened. It may be that there was something that you couldn't see on the road.
The peg...I know where it is (ok one of two pairs I have sat doing nothing...) PM me your addy and it'll be in the post tomorrow. I've been told I need to walk more and I'm not in the mood to go out today....but if I need to go out....I go out.

On any new tire, soak a rag in Goof Off and wipe it down. This will remove 90% of the mold-release chemical that makes it so greasy. There is still a break-in period, but it is only about 10 miles.

Will any Aliphatic ( Mineral spirits , gas , etc . ) or Aromatic ( laquer thinner , benzene ) Hydrocarbons suffice ? Goof Off is pricey and there's plenty of the other stuff lying around .

Just ride like it is raining and every turn has painted lines . 50 miles is suggested. No need to add to the cost.

Yesterday I got my girlfriend to put some kms on my bike to start wearing in my new front tyre and charge battery, was rather worried about the whole thing as she can hardly reach the pegs i've mounted foward of the pipes, so glad when they both got back safe an sound...

I still havent got my new tyres and lowey's tale of woe gave me the willies as here in queensland we have had constant rain for 2 weeks so we have slippy roads, new tyres are slippy reminds me of black ice from the old country.
Glad you didnt hurt yourself lowey and because of this message I am going to ask the shop to clean the tyres with whatever they should be using after fitting
Blessings

I wouldn't mind Revnd, but I was riding the new tyre in the wet for a couple of days... only some bugger pulled out on me, hence the hard braking and fall Thanks all for your voices of concern

Instead of applying a solution, could I use a sandpaper on the rubber to score it and take a thin layer of rubber off?

Sanding the tire would help. But the oil is in the rubber and has to "work" its way out...sanding tires was done by some sport bike people, so the break in period was shortened. What is needed is for the tire to heat up, this moves the oil out of the tire. That is why you can put a new tire on a sport bike and ride on a track and after a several laps the tire is ready to go...

I wouldn't worry too much revnd. I rode my bike home from the dealer in the rain. Took it easy and had zero problems.

Glad to hear your ok mate, bloody cagers eh. i would have thought cleaning a tyre off with chemical solvents wouldnt be good for a tyre ,degrading the rubber etc. i think i would be leaning towards sanding myself .
