Heya, folks --

So, I'm sure that everyone hates the stock rubber speedo cable loop thingie on the front fender. Yes, mine's broken too. The question is:

While I know newspeedmaster.com has replacements, they're, um, a bit on the pricey side ($50 plus shipping). If that's what they cost, so be it, but I'd really like to hear some other people's takes on what to do about this stupid little design flaw.

I'm told that other similar gizmos for other metric bikes will fit, but... suggetions? Better yet, part numbers?

If you are concerned about price, zip tie it.

Zip tie works... I also got myself an eye bolt, cut off most of the threads, got some self sealing washers (rubber backed) and did it that way. Worked fine. Not as clean looking, but it worked.

The best inexpensive two ways I have heard to repair it,is to reverse the plastic thing and super glue it, or use a P clamp.

J&P Cycle Catalog.Page 307.Two good options.#5000771 wiring clamp,$5.99.Or #970-161 Mounting clamp,wire&cable,$19.99.Either one looks like it would do a good job as a replacement.Dennis Kirk also comes to mind. Al

I went through 2 of the plastic loops, on the dealer, and then ziplocked it for a while. I sprang for the 50 on the chrome loop and everything is fine.

Zip tie it for now and save your nickels to buy one of Brent's. Well worth the money, and cheaper than taking your wife/girlfriend out to dinner. I'll also look around and see if I still have the stock one I took off to put the one from Brent on. If I can find the cheap stock POS, I'll send you an E-O-gram and get your mailing info. No cost to you.

If you have a big hardware chain near you like OHS, go to the hardware section where they have that huge isle of drawers with a million various small parts and i'd bet you'll find a few options.

Brent's loop is unbeatable. Sharp looking, great design, easy to install and durable. I love it and wouldn't do anything else.

I gotta vote for Brent's chrome loop. Like Ron Popeil said, "Set it, and forget it!"....

Hell, spend some of your moldy money....!

Must be our crap English weather then ...
I only know three guys over here with it and they've all pitted and gone manky pretty quick with chrome flaking off.
That's the loop, not the guys - though .....

Hiya Mike

The chrome loop off Brent looks great - I just don't think it holds up to UK weather

PS: a quick look at your biog doesn't tell us much: where ya from, what bike do you have etc?
Let us know - we won't bite ....

Hmm, I wonder if a self sealing stem bolt would work?

Well, FWIW, I wound up removing the rubber crappy one, cutting off the loop part with a razor, drilling a small hole through the base of the rubber, and putting a ziptie through it. Quick fix, doesn't look TOO bad (from a distance, anyway) and... well, it didn't cost $50.

We'll see. If I magically find $50 in an old pair of jeans I may spring for the chrome one, but right now I have other mods that need done sooner!

Newbie - with an option
Hi All, I just bought an 05 TBA. It was the one speedmasterb had for sale. I Live in CT, so I got it just in time for winter! Anyway I've been soaking up as much info as I can off this board, lots of good stuff! Here is one option for the speedo loop I found; Billet Cable Guide , it's cheap too.
The rubber one on my TBA/65 miles is broken, so I may try it myself. The mods begin!

Nah -- duct tape to get some more tread on the rear tire. And a toilet-paper tube to cover the clutch cable.

Hey Vintage, where in CT? I have gotten over there a few times to ride with Mert and Matt, hopefully we can all met up next year. Let us know how that cable loop holds!

I'll watch for you on the road - I live about 25 miles from South Windsor (and my husband actually works in S.W.). What color is your America? Mine is black/silver, so be on the lookout!

I installed a pro 1 universal loop this weekend. I like it. If anyone is interested it did require some simple mods to get it to mount.
1. The TBA speedo cable is too large on both ends to fit through the loop. I had to file 2 slight flat spots opposite each other in the knurled end that screws into the speedometer. Once filed the speedo cable can be threaded through the loop. Don't go crazy with the file, just bring down enough to get the screw end through.
2. The hole in the fender from the rubber mount is about 1/2 inch in diameter, too big for the loop's screw. So I cut the rubber off flush with the fender and used the remaining plug as a spacer. This worked out well because the loop is now rubber mounted and has a little give to it.
3. My speedo cable was routed very tight under a few wires near the gas tank. With the speedo end disconnected I pulled it though the wires and just let it hang free when I reconnected it to the speedo. I then zip tied it to the wire bundle. This seems to let the cable to hang a lot looser and cause much less stress at the loop.

Picture attached for your viewing pleasure!

I did almost the same as Jaeger did. Cut off the loop part with a sharp knife or razor and drill a little whole in what’s left. He fixed the cable with a ziptie but I used a CHROME KEY RING instead. Looks good (enough).
