Scrabble the boardgame was invented in 1948 by Alfred Butts, but earlier forms were called "Criss-Cross Words" and "Lexico" and were produced as early as 1938. To assign point values to each letter Butts studied the New York Times and counted the frequency of the 26 letters of the alphabet.
Each Scrabble set contains 100 tiles and a board comprising 225 squares to place them on.
