Had a bunch of time to see some decent movies lately. I took my son to see the new National Treasure movie. It was pretty good. I'm not going to say it was better than the first one, but it was good. On TV, I have seen a couple good movies (and some terrible ones that I ended up turning off) thanks to the modern technical miracle of "On Demand": Bon Cop Bad Cop: It is an action drama with comedy that is in half English and half French (which is part of the joke). Good movie. Stranger than Fiction: Finally a Will Ferrell movie that was not completely juvenile, stupid and irratating. Quite the opposite, it is good intelligent humor and a very good movie. Soren

Well, this thread is taking off like a shot. Here's a hi-jack, in the opposite direction. Hot Rod. What a humorless festering pussball of a movie. Rarely do I come across a movie that I stop watching partway in. I don't know if they were trying to channel Napoleon Dynamite or what. I shouldn't have expected anything from the SNL crew. They haven't been funny in 20 years.

Thanks to "On Demand", I recently sat through....
Silent Hill.
It Sucked!
And was very predictable. Only today did I find out it was based on a video game....did I mention it sucked.
This weekend I'm going to try to see "I am Legend".

All:
I just recently saw "SuperBad". Didn't care for it at all. I know I should have known what I was getting in for, but rarely do I say during a movie, "OMG, this still has about an hour left". However, on the other side of the equation, I saw "The Good Shepard". Really liked it. Be prepared to pay attention while you are watching though. Easy to get lost in timeline transitions.

Wallace and Gromit was a bad one, I almost never shut a movie off mid way but with that one I don't think I even made it half way before I just couldn't watch anymore.

The Tarantino flick "Deathproof" just came out on DVD and is way good, ends with one of the most exciting chase scenes I've ever watched. Its starts SSLLLOOOOWW though, you're gonna think I'm an idiot for recommending it for the first hour of the movie, but the last half is worth it.

Two thumbs down for Super Bad. Even though I am pretty immature and enjoy stupid flicks, this one was even too juvenile for me. Wish I could get those 90+/- minutes back. Looking forward to seeing Meet The Robinsons.

The Golden Compass's very anti-Christian and anti religion theme has really hurt its ticket sales. Kind of nice to see viewers speak with the money they dont spend.
I hear Atonement and Enchanted are great.

I don't want to start a debate, but I must've slept through that movie because I didn't come to the same conclusions. But if you're right, I guess that makes it the anti-Narnia.

Beowulf was pretty good. If you're into mythology. It stuck to the myth pretty well, for Hollywood.

I stand corrected. I read a bit of an interview with the author of the book and he's quite upfront about it.

I havent seen The Golden Compass yet. As far as anti-Christian and anti-religion, I'll decide after I see it. Seems to me most of the time when people say stuff like that, they haven't seen the movie. I have sen Beowulf. I thought it was pretty good. I'll probably buy the DVD when it comes out. Quote:

I gotta agree. One thing I have no tolerance of is stupid, moron comedy.

I was suprised about Transformers. It was actually someone on here that said a while back they enjoyed it that made me want to see it.

Transformers was ok. My biggest complaint is that they didnt show the cars enough.
I thought Resevoir Dogs was incredibly boring.
The Underworld movies were good.

Ok... here are some pulp fiction type (the genre not the movie) movies I like (and own)... Lucky # Sleven Sin city Bandits Kill Bill Crank
Some of my favorite movies are ones that are a bit offbeat and are kind of unknown to most people. Here are some that I have managed to track down on DVD: Brazil Repo-Man Suburbia The Anarchist Cookbook SLC Punk Bringing Out The Dead Reckless Dead Man
I am still trying to track down 1984 on DVD.

A remake (not as good either) of "A Fistful of Dollars". Which was probably based on a Japanese film.

I don't see that as a remake of a Fist Full of Dollars, a movie I also love along with most of Clint Eastwoods Westerns.

And was actually co-written by Akira Kurosawa, the original writer on the Japanese film it was loosely based on.
Personally, I don't think any of the above-mentioned flicks rate with the Band Of Brothers HBO series. I know, it's not a "Movie" per se, but it's still most excellent viewing.

That's like saying Jose Feliciano's "Light My Fire" isn't a cover of The Doors song because he uses a different style.

Here's one nobody else will probably mention...
Bubba Ho-Tep - Bruce Campbell as Elvis and the late Ossie Davis as JFK (now black) fight a cowboy-boot-wearing ancient Egyptian mummy that is killing residents of a West Texas nursing home and sucking their souls out.
Yes it's exactly as surreal and campy as it sounds...

Gee! I don't know why exactly, ...BUT after re-reading this thread, I'm kind of reminded of one of my all time favorite flicks....."Inherit The Wind".(1960) Now, if any one of you people out there happen to run across it soon, tell me, does the cynical acid-tongued newspaper reporter played by Gene Kelly(based BTW on N.Y. reporter H.L.Menchen) who's covering the "Monkey Trial" in this flick remind you of anyone around here??? (like maybe...ME???!!!) Not to worry though for those more inclined to side with the Fredrick March character...you see, Mr.Kelly's snide character does get a dressing down near the end by Spencer Tracy, ya know!
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

No Soren it doesn't, they decided to sell both separately which I was disappointed with.
I'd like to add Layer Cake with Daniel Craig and recently I saw Gone Baby Gone. Great directorial debut of Ben Affleck. My favorite movie though has to be Lawrence of Arabia. Just beautifully filmed.
