Chi Chi, Kimmy's new dog that replaced Molly (long sad story some of you may remember) has truly become one of the family...He is a full breed Chihuahua, and is the most loving animal I have ever seen. He is into everything, and I have grown closer to him than any other dog I have ever had....ANYWAY, I was thinking of a way to get him on my bike, I know he would love it as much as I do, I just have to figure out a way for him to ride....any ideas?

Considering that every chihuahua I have ever met has tried to have me for lunch, I would recommend tying the leash to the sissy bar.

I used to have a miniture rat terrier named Keisa (german for large and agressive, hah.) who used to like riding around in my leather coat, with her head sticking out the front. Really got some second looks from drivers by. Here in town, a guy has on old Honda with a rack on the back, and a plastic milk crate (they call them organizers at wal-mart) strapped to the back, lined with carpet. He has a small dog of some sort and takes him all over.

Chest pouch?---Above all, a must have is some kinda EYE protection for the little guy, maybe a windscreen.

A gal brought one to the New Ulm Rally last year. Said he rides with her everywhere she goes.

She road a vintage Indian, and had some of that spongee material you might line your kitchen cabinet shelves with on the tank for the dog. You can by that stuff anywhere, and it comes in many colors. I see people using small (4"x6"?) pieces of this stuff on the dashes of their cars all the time to hold things such as coffee mugs, phones, glasses and other small items. It is tactile enough to keep small objects from sliding around (under normal driving conditions).

In the seventies, when my brother had his Tiger my parents used to have a collie, he used to sit in between my brothers legs and put his feet on the tank, that was until he had a custom paint job. The dog used to go mad because he could not go out with him from then on.

not to be a wet blanket, and i know chihuahuas are tough but the results of any of these suggestions in even a mild accident would be very unfortunate.

We had a backpack designed to carry a small dog or cat for our corgi, but she outgrew it in short order. It had a mesh panel so she could see out. I doubt a chahooy dog would ever get too big for such a thing. I think it came from Petsmart.

Don't forget though, when you are that small, your best chance of surviving lies in getting scared and running. So, take care to work him into it slowly and carefully lest he have a heart attack.

You beat me to it Bill. I love my dog, and while it would be cool for her to ride along, it's just not worth the risk in my opinion. Also I would think a dog riding inside my jacket or in front of me would be a big distraction. But, to each his own.

Even the lady that taught my MSF course rides with her dog - in a milkcrate on the fender rack. Can't remember the breed but he was around 40lb size.

I imagine that would work well with poodles.

I have the same problem with my pup. She's a minature pincher, chihuahuas, and pomeranian mix. Everytime she hears the America start up she gets so excited. She jumps up and down panting wanting to go for a ride. I had thought about using a doggie harness like used in cars. The only problem is finding a way to attach it to myself for easy release.
