Respectful input was always welcome. An even more important skill for a manager is to ask the right questions and learn how to listen. Someone skilled in this area is always getting input from their subordinates.
Read the book, "Coaching for Improved Work Performance" by Ferdinand Fournies. It's an execellent primer for managers.
