I've also been there and done that. I've melted shoe rubber on my pipes and melted blue tarp plastic on them. I try to stay away from anything abrasive if there's a way to get it off without wearing into that thin layer of chrome on the pipes. A razor blade is ok if you're staying ABOVE the chrome. I got both of the above problems off with acetone and polished up with Semichrome.
